There have been several studies done on this issue. Children who were spanked grew up to be distrustful and had anger management issues. They have also been shown to have an inability to respect people of authority.
The problem is that in the short term, spanky works. If you put the fear of physical harm into someone, they will do what you want them to do. Since parents see results, its hard to get them to stop.
I have had much better success with postive reinforcement than I could have ever achieved with spanking.

No help for not spanking. I can only give reasons to spank children. And the main reason for that is that time outs don't work unless they fear you will do something else. However, I will say NEVER spank children when you are mad.
P.S: When you tell your child to go stand in the corner and he responses F@ck you. What do you do then?

Nothing wrong with spanking as long as its not beating. Every kid is different. Some times taking something away works others grounding. Every parent needs to find what works. If my dad did not spank me i would do anything i wanted. Grounding and taking things away from me does not work But if u spank do it when other people r not around..

don't spank them if you want them to grow up knowing they can get away with doing wrong & not get corrected.

because when parents spank their children, they either teach children that it is an acceptable thing to use violence to solve their problems or they lose their children's respect.
How can a child love and respect a parent that spanks them?

Well any form of hitting will only teach kids to hit others. Also it's an easy out for anger release. You don't want a kid punching out the neighbor's brat everytime he gets mad at something.
