We're already making the traditional stuff: green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberries. What other interesting, unique and tasty ideas are there?

Here's a real oldie from the Eastern Shore of Maryland:
Creamed onions
Peel and boil 1 lb. pearl onions until tender.
Drain, reserve some of the liquid.
Make a cream sauce:
melt 4 tablespoons butter, stir in 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup flour to make a roux (amount will depend on atmospheric conditions). Do not let the roux brown.
Season with Italian seasoning, or use a combination of dried oregano, marjoram, and thyme.
Combine with onions, using reserved liquid to thin as needed.
Adjust salt and pepper.
Serve warm.

We do a fantastic cranberry sorbet instead of cranberry sauce -- it's an icy, tangy complement to all that salty, rich food. Plus, it's a do-ahead that you could make tomorrow and have on T-day. Here it is:

Jacque's Cranberry Sorbet

Boil together until soft:
1 bag fresh cranberries (1 qt.)
1 3/4 c. water
2 3/4 c. sugar
Press through a sieve to remove seeds and skins.

Soak:
1 envelope unflavored gelatin
1/4 c. cold water

Whip:
2 egg whites
1/8 t. salt

Stir the gelatin mixture into the cranberry mixture. Fold in egg whites. Freeze for 2 hours, then whip with a hand mixer every hour or so or until fluffy and frozen fairly hard.

Stewed pumpkin

About 1/4 of Calabaza pumpkin (you can get it from spanish grocery store or westindian or asian food shop)
peel it, scoop seeds out cut into about 2 in. cubes.

brown some stew beef in the bottom of your pot with some garlic, onion, bell pepper, celery.

Add the pumpkin, and add enough water to cover everything.
Add a seasoning called Goya Sazon(at least two packs)
Add some beef and chicken buillion

Bring to a boil, and let simmer until meat is tender, and all the pumpkin has disintegrated. You don't want chunks of pumpkin, just for it to thicken the soup up.

It is so delicious!

Homemade balsamic or lemon vinaigrette for the greens, and top with feta or goat cheese? Stuffed french bread? Pasta salad with cherry tomatoes and Kalamatas and an Italian dressing? Antipasto platter to pass around? Individual shrimp cocktails?

LOL No not for possum! But i always make a green bean casserole with real bacon thats awesome. or yams with mini marshmellows and brown sugar. Then I make a candy with a bag of chocolate chips, and half stick butter- melt it and take off the heat mix in a whole bag of mini colored marshmellows and 1/2 cup chopped walnuts then divide in two and roll into wax paper in log form. Put in freezer and let freeze. Once frozen cut into slices and u can see all the colored marsh mellows and they look like church windows! Sooooo easy to make and soooo yummy too! Mashed pototoes and use turkey broth in them to make them even better!
