(Generalized because everyone does things a bit different, but it shouldn't be far off of what is below)

What you should expect is a clean, safe and professional piercer who is friendly and smart. As far as pain, that's relative, some people will say it hurts, others say its not bad. Overall, all piercings hurt, but for how quick it is, I promise that it won't be bad.

After filling out paperwork and whatnot, you'll have to wash out your mouth with mouthwash and the piercer will examine your tongue for veins or anything that they will need to be aware of (this also includes abnormal lumps or odd tongue webbing). Depending on your tongue, you might not be able to get a piercing in the center and maybe not even one at all, though that last part is rare.

I mark a spot on the tongue, and ask what the person thinks, though not all piercers do that and there isn't really anywhere else it can go, its just so you know what to expect. From there, clamps will be placed on your tongue, the piercer will probably pierce from the bottom up as to not hit a vein or anything and then the jewelry goes in, all in all, its done and over with very quick. You will be asked to rinse out your mouth again.

After you have the piercing done, they should go over aftercare and give you a sheet about this. After 7-14 days when swelling goes down, you go back and they will put in a shorter and more suiting barbell.

During the process, the piercer should explain what is going on and I'm sure you know that they should show you that all the tools and equipment are clean and safe.

Things I have been told to warn others about: avoid foods that are spicy and acidic, start using a new tooth brush immediately, try not to play with the tongue and piercing.

Expect swelling and adjustment to eating for 4-14 days, expect some bleeding, but nothing excessive.

Good luck and if you need more info for the time being go to:

Side note:They should not numb the tongue, this should never be done as numbing often relaxes the muscle tissue which can cause inaccurate piercings. Also, while numb, if something does go wrong, you won't feel it for hours. There is never a need to numb an area to be pierced and if you are that worried about the pain, you wouldn't get the piercing.

okay here is how the process goes.

first the piercer will telly you to hold out you tongue and he'll dry your tongue with a paper towel. Then takes a marker outs a dot where the needle will go thru. Next he will get the clamp and stick it on wherever the dot is. The piercer should lift your tongue up to make sure that he wont hit any veins. Now comes the needle. While the piercer is holding your tongue down with the clamps he will then insert the needle and when its all the way thru stick the barbell in then take the needle out, screw the ball on and voila! you now have a tongue piercing =]

As for the aftercare I would highly highly recommend non alcoholic mouthwash use after EVERYTHING you put in your mouth and i mean everything lol. Also buy H2ocean its teh ****.

I also recommend that you eat a filling meal BEFORE you get your piercing because your tongue will swell and it wont be very pleasant to eat lol. Foods you can eat is things that are mushy and things the are cold/can slide down you throat easily. (mashed potatoes, oatmeal, grits, applesauce, ice cream, mac n cheese and pudding <333) Also drinking LOTS of ice water will numb the pain not to mention keep you hydrated. Ice cold water fells sooo good on a tongue piercing

My tongue is my favorite piercing that i have and once you get it and when its done healing you'll like it alot =] Hope that helped ya much

First off getting your tongue pierced is not as bad as a lot of people say. It does take longer to pierce than other places though because they have to keep wiping your tongue and checking the markings. They may not pierce you if you have a vein running down the centre of the underside of your tongue.
First you stick your tongue out they have a look, mark it, you rince your mouth, they dry your tongue, clamp it to make sure its all ok, then you rinse and dry again and they pierce it, from underside up. you then rinse your mouth until it stops bleeding (it doesnt pour so dont worry)
Once it is pierced the bar they put in will be long because your tongue will swell, but it might take about 24 hours before you notice it. as long as you keep your mouth clean it is fine, i was told to move the bar twice a day and clean the underside of the balls on the bar (the bits next to your tongue) and to use a mouthwash a few times a day for a couple weeks. After a few weeks the bar will be changed to a smaller one.
I thought i was going to swallow the bar at first because t feels so strange when its first done but you wont so dont worry!

alright first of all if it's not taken care of properly yes it can get infected and you should really watch how sterile everything is because if they are not opening the needle or anything in front of you just pass on it and as for pain i had a sharp pain that went down my jaw for like an hour but then it just numbed away after a while. as for the process they have you rinse your mouth out with mouth wash and then they mark the spot under your tongue and on top of your tongue. then they stick the needle through and put the tongue ring in and the needle comes out. I've had mine done for about 3 months now and as for food that i ate well not a whole lot bothered it because i rinsed my mouth out everyday twice or three times a day with mouth wash watered down because full strength mouth wash can not let it heal fast and they tell you to do that anyways. I used Listerine and watered it down! If u don't like it take it out! But really it's not that bad

some people can't get their tongue pierced because of the vein that runs along the underneath your tongue,if it's too big.i had banana flavoured stuff to numb my tongue.weird but kinda tasty! (do not swallow it)! don't get it done if you embarrass easily, having a numb mouth makes you drool alot! check out the premises of whoever is doing it,common sense should tell you if it's dodgy or not.before gettin pierced, you should be asked to sign a piece of paper, confirming your age, you're not drunk, or out your face on drugs and that you consent the guy to do it.aftercare is pretty easy, buy plenty mouthwash, but it has to be one with no alcohol (not sure why, that's what i was told) and depending on the swelling and pain, take ibuprofen to ease the swelling. Don't try and eat a pot noodle half an hour after getting it done like i did!

I have heard that it was illegal, but i am unsure how true that is.

You have to bare in mind that your tongue has a main artery in it and a mass of nerve endings.
Having ti done is pretty much hit and miss as each of the above is different for each person.

It swells greatly, and you can't really eat at all and i have know people to need dissolvable pain killers.

Perhaps goggle the risks and go and discus it with a piercer but IF you do get it done make sure you know everything about it and that you won't regret it.

Think about it, research all the possible dangers and side effects then decide. If you do still want to go for it make sure (The most important part) that you go to a professional, somewhere not stupidly cheap and dingy looking. It costs for them to have the proper sterile equipment. It can be highly dangerous even fatal to let someone inexperienced and irresponsible perform this procedure. I've had mine in for 8 years. Will take it out when the time feels right. I am however, worried about the effects on my teeth. Hope this helps.

Hi Amy I had my tounge pierced about 10 years ago it doesn't hurt at all, they get a clamp on your tounge with a hole in and push the bar through, very quickly. The first bar they put in is about 5cm in length with slightly larger balls then normal, this stays in for a week then you can put a bar in of your choice. After an hour your tounge will start to swell twice its normal size. this will last for about 5 days. During this time you won't be able to eat much, ice cream and McD's milkshake are a god send. The length of the first bar makes you talk a bit lispy too. As you sleep your bar will get caught in your teeth and you will have dreams that your tounge is being ripped out, which was the worst. You will want take out every minute of every day and hate having it in.
When you return to your new over weight tattoo'd friend and get your smaller bar fitted, you will realise that it is worth the pain.
I kept mine in for about 3 years and then had to take it out, I had heard that once you take it out, it closes up. This is not true, I can now go for about 6 months without it in, then put it back in no problem. You will get really used to having it in and hate having it out. Depending on your likes it can have its oral sexual advantages too, if you like licking carpet, my girl ensures me that it is fantastic. On the other hand I have been with somebody who has enjoyed a mouthful, she had a pierced tounge but I didn't really notice any benefits from it.
You don't need any bathing aids for your tounge as spit has anti-septic in which kills any germs that can infect.
Do it, get through the week of hell and you'll love it.

Be careful! The actual piercing doesn't have as many potential dangers, as the jewelry itself does. I have heard that the worst part is how much dental damage is done by the constant clicking of the jewelry against the teeth. I say go for belly button or nose piercing, they seem safer!

i had a tongue piercing for a couple of years but took it out as i got bored with it. never thought i had a problems, but iv noticed i dont get pains in my ears any more.

the actual piercing, for me, didnt hurt it was the swelling afterwards that was rubbish, and you'll be stuck eating soup and ice cream for a couple of weeks and your speech will be naff aswell!

just follow the piercers instructions, clean it regularly etc etc

one thing i can say though is it didnt have any effect on my teeth, they thankfully all remaind intact!!!

everyones experience with a tongue piercing is entirely down to the individual...i cant say oo get it done because i had very little problems, because you might! and there is only one way your going to find out!!
