She was a stray that showed up here a couple months ago and we have sort of adopted her as our own. But we can't keep her in the house because she doesn't like our two dogs.

About two weeks ago I started noticing that she was getting wider in her abdominal area and she has become more friendly towards us and our other cat, who is fixed. She hasn't been fixed yet because we didn't think she was old enough. When we found her she was small, and we guessed only a few months old.

How can I tell if she is pregenant? I've heard people say check if the nipples are pink but does that mean just the nipple, or the nipple and the area around it?

Most cats do not have a heat cycle October-December, their are a few exceptions, and few have year round. About 8 months old is a start, but not all of them. Have you had alot of courters for her attention? Are their more then usual male cats that were hanging around and fighting? Is she supper lovie-dovie -more than normal? From conception to having litter is 63 days. If you plan on having her spay- take her to animal shelter/ vet if she is not to far along , the shelter will spay her for a smaller amount. They can tell you if she is in heat, etc. GOD BLESS YOU! sus04mc@yahoo.com

It can mean either (the nipple or the area around it) ... generally the nipples become a little more prominent & if you gently rub your hand over her tummy you can feel them more through the fur.

One of mine instead of pinking up, her nipples seem to go a pearly white colour ... but then she's always been awkward.

She might become more affectionate or you might even notice her vomiting ... some of mine suffer from morning sickness. She'll be more hungry than usual too.

I think the nipples pink up at about three weeks along - some cats even lose some hair around them - then about a week or two after that, you'll notice a slight roundness in her tummy. A few weeks later & it's really obvious indeed!

If I were you, I'd run my hand over her tummy & if you can feel her nipples, then I'd be inclined to think that she was pregnant - especially as you've noticed her getting wider & she's more affectionate.

Most cats are very fertile. If your pet has had access to the outside world while she was in heat, she is probably pregnant.

Pregnancy in the cat can be detected in several ways. First, your veterinarian can palpate the cat's abdomen at about 23 days of gestation and detect the fetuses in the uterus. Another method would be to perform an ultrasound examination. This can be performed to evaluate the status of the uterus at any time. At about 40 days of gestation the fetal skeletons ossify, or harden into bone, and an x-ray can detect the kittens. X-rays in late pregnancy are a safe way to both detect pregnancy and to find out how many new mouths there will be to feed.

It takes 61 to 63 days for kittens to gestate. Prior to your cat giving birth you may notice mammary development and nesting behavior.

You will want to discuss with your veterinarian what needs to be done for your pet to ensure that her health and the kittens' health are good. If she is not pregnant now, you may want to get her spayed so that you will not encounter this problem again. Please check out the vetcentric.com encyclopedia article, "Spaying, Feline" for further information.

When you take your pet to the veterinarian, the doctor will perform a complete physical examination. This is very important because if she is not pregnant, you will want to make sure that nothing is wrong that has made her appear to be heavy.

Take her to the vet for spaying. They can still spay her even if she is pregnant if she is not too far along. The last thing you and the world needs is more unwanted kittens. Do you have a garage or someplace you can keep her confined for recovery after the surgery?

If she is expanding in the abdominal area then she is probably pregnant. You can still take her to the vet for desexing but it will cost alot more.
