Yes, it is illegal. That is the catch, and also that some people are being sued for uploading songs onto it.

The BPI (British Phonographic Industry) are using computers to obtain these files and then trace the file to where it came from and then issue a fine, if you don't pay it they take you to court.

Well, the software actually isn't but there are very people who get permission from the owner of the copyright, as it normally costs to get permission and why would they pay for the right to let the public have it if they are then going to give it to the public for free?

The chances are that you will be downloading a song illegally when you do and that can cost you a lot, so you're better off just buying the song legally.

johnboy726, not everyone uses it and the fact that you know a lot of people who use it does not make it right for you to use it. Would you walk into a shop and just take a CD? That is technically what you are doing when you use services like LimeWire.

Jessicat, more and more people are now being taken to court, or issued fines for this sort of think. Just because no-one you know has been caught it doesn't go to say the chances are "slim to none" and the chances are increasing all the time.

ben b, Just because a person is percieved to be rich, it doesn't make it right to steal from them. The record industry uses the money it earns to invest in new UK artists and money also needs to be used to pay for instruments, a van to take everything to a gig etc. If the record industries have less money then that it less new music and less new artists, which isn't good for anyone who likes listening to new music.
As for the fact that you should be able to do what you want with the music as you paid for it, when you buy a music CD you are paying for the PERSONAL COPY ONLY, that means you are paying for the right to listen to the music at home, or to put the songs onto an mp3 player for you to listen to, you are not paying for the right to make the music availavle to the public. It's like buying a knife and saying you can kill someone with it because you paid for the knife, you have only paid for the right to use the knife for lawful purposes, and not the right to kill someone with it.
I also think that the fact that you encourage your kids to take part in illegal activity is absolutely disgusting, you are teaching them it is OK to break the law as long as they don't get caught - not something a good parent would teach their kids.

There is lots of free, quality music out there, you can download, and burn to cd, free.
the record industry and pop stars are making millions and billions, so if technology exists now, to share our paid for music, as we wish, as we've paid for it...copyright, and technology, is firmly Thier problem.
Bearshare is a good site, but with all, you face two risks, one, that the site itself (the ftp program and search engine) may contain marketing adware, and 2, that what you download, may not be what it says it is. The latter, could bugger up your pc, the former, track your usage and net purchases(for marketing you) for as long as you have it on your pc.(long term).
To run a p2p, and burn a cd, requires a minimum computer, my kids do it successfully, on a £100 second hand pc, which surfs, displays full screen video, burns cd's........and i just re format it when it gets bogged down.
And here's the thing, Learn how to do a re format, and re instalation of windows, all drivers, programs, (and make sure youve got back up disks of everything) and you can Play away regardless.
In other words, as a virus cant "work" from a music cd, get this software, downloads lots, make cd's....then reformat....spyware, viruses? so what! Theyll be history after the format...you'll have the cd's.
The chances of prosecution? NIL!

No, being too lazy to get and work to buy all the music you download should be though. I'm sick of everyone being too fat from eating twinkies and playing WoW for 89 hours straight to actually go out and work! Is it that hard to go get some money and actually pay for what you want? Downloading copyrighted material from the internet IS stealing. You should ALL be ashamed of yourself. Crazy peoples, oh wait that reminds me....

What? F off....
