"Rich" is a very subjective opinion. Why would you compliment someone for your perception of him/her having more money (which is what I believe you are inferring) than you?

Everyone lives according to their means.

It is rude because it is considered rude to bring up the subject of a person's financial worth. I would not walk into your home and say," wow,I can tell by your address and worn clothes that you are really poor, you must be really proud of your financial status".Anymore than I would walk in and say " Wow, your house and clothes sure are expensive, you must be really rich" People tend to forget that there are real people behind each car and each home and they want to be judged on the merits of themselves as people, not on the value of the earning power that they do or do not have. I hope you have gained some insight into why you don't say that to people.

People can make a lot of inferences and judgments about others on how much money they have. While I don't find it offensive when someone says me (or more appropriately my dad) is well off, it can be kind of uncomfortable. Most people do not want to be labeled by their financial situation. We're all different, come from different financial and social situations, but it doesn't really make us the people we are.

If you say it where it sounds like you only care about their money, or it's the first or most important thing you notice about them, it could come across as if you are focusing only on their material appearance, and don't value or see them as people.

There are other ways to compliment them personally, such as admiring them for being so successful in their profession, so wise at managing money or investing assets, for living well and having excellent taste in fashion or home design, for working hard in life to obtain their level of success, etc.

This emphasizes the good, positive qualities you admire in them as people, regardless of how their financial assets may be measured in dollars and cents.

You might be wrong to think they are rich. They might be neck-high in debt yet spend like they are rich. Also when you say they are rich, it highlights to them that you are focusing on their money and might want to borrow from them since you think they are rich or that you expect them to give you things since they are the ones with more money than you.

I don't know ...but I was raised that you don't disscuss money or lack of money with anyone! By calling someone rich you assume a whole lot about that person.... they may look rich cause of family wealth but have none of their own.Calling someone rich also implies that cause they have money that don't have problems.

Because YOU don't really know what their personal status is. They may "appear" rich to you but it does not make it so.

Its not rude. People are weird when it comes to money. My girlfriend seems to think that people who are private school educated are better and yet by her own admission all her private school educated friends are selfish and shallow. Go figure.
