I got a 2 year old cat last week from a shelter. He was neutered, de wormed, had his shots updated and chipped in a matter of days.

The day after I got him he started coughing. I thought it was a hairball. 4 days later he is still coughing at least twice in the evenings when I'm with him. He also has little interest in his food and his behaviour has changed from his needy, playful self to docile and sleepy.

What could be wrong with him, if anything, and what should I do?

As far as I know , they don"t neuter and deworm at the same time because of the anesthesia. Some times their throat is dry because of the anesthesia. And the animal shelter that I do all my adoptiables at always gives an antiobiotic shot with the neutering/spaying. I would take him back and have them check him out, I don't think It will cost u if u take his papers with you. Also the change in behavior is strange. And the not eating has me worried. Females go 1-3 days sometimes without eating, but males are eating extra good the next day. Cats will start to dehydrate after 3 days from lack of water. Ask the shelter if they gave an antiobiotic shot to cut down on infection? If after taking him back and you feel something isn't right, then take him to a vet/or different shelter with explanation and any meds he is on GOD BLESS YOU! sus04mc@yahoo.com

It depends on the situation. If the dog is whelping a litter of pups or a cat has a little diarhhea then the first option would be to handle it at home to see if the situation gets better. And while waiting people can ask other pet owners if they have any ideas on how to deal with the problem and ask for general advice. If it doesn't get better then the next option is the vet. Some people do have a few hum dingers on here, but for the most part the questions are good, valid ones.

I adopted my kitten from the humane society and he was 2 months old. He was neutered and had his first set of shots. He started sneezing and had a watery eye. The shelter usually has a certificate that gives you a first visit free to a vet. I would suggest taking him to get a check up to see what is wrong for sure. Mine wound up with a virus that is very contagious among kitties. Yours sounds like it is something different. He sounds like a sick little kitty. Take him to the vet asap. Especially since he has changed in his eating habits and his playfulness.

Hi I think it is great you went to a shelter to pick out your cat, wish more people would save there lives too.I am not sure what is wrong with your poor cat ,maybe it is an reaction to the meds he was given, but I think I would just take him back to the vet and have the Vet check him over to see what the problem is,you seem to love your cat so that is what I would do if he were mine.Good Luck!

it sounds like your cat has hairballs that he cant cough up which is lodged deep inside his digestive track. you should take him to a veteran to get a diagnose of some sort.
