well the most important thing is to remember to keep it appropriate, dont put up pictures of you nad your friends partyingin or being half naked, and dont post about how much fun you had getting high.
tom (the myspace creator) has worked very hard to make more advances in myspace security, so nowadays, you can make it so only the people that you want to, can see your myspace.
it is completely safe if you remember to be smart, just like you wouldnt talk to a stranger on the street, dont talk to someone on myspace.
the amount of information you give out is strictly up to you, you dont have to put your name or picture, and you dont have to friend anyone that requests it.
i personally think myspace is great, people are becoming more and more impersonal thru text messaging and what not, but myspace is a great way to keep in touch with friends, and get help on homework or what not, in fact it is A LOT like yahoo questions, talking/helping complete strangers.
hope this helps
ADDED:::
No if you put your profile to private they can only see your avatar and name, (which can be an alias or whatever you choose)
you can also make it that only people that know you, ie know your last name or email address can friend you

Really consider why you want Myspace in the first place. A reason like "everyone else has it" won't fly with your parents. You have to have a legitimate reason, but don't lie about why you want it. (This applies to anything)
If you decide you reason is a good one, show your parents that. For example, if you are an artist, show your parents some of your work, then tell them that you can use Myspace to exhibit your work to the world.
If they still object, come up with an alternative site you can join. Your parents are less likely to object to a site catering to a specific community, like Fanart Central, deviantArt, fanfiction.net, Runescape, etc. Sites like these somehow seem to be approved more by parents.
If they do say no, don't argue. Consider the advantages of not using Myspace: no risk of online predators, no uncomfortable situations, no cyber bullying, no spyware/viruses. (These can also be excuses when your friends ask why you don't have Myspace.)
Never go off and join Myspace when your parents aren't home; they can and will find out.

Ok, I think it's pretty much impossible for the average person (someone who doesn't know who to hack computers) for a person to get into a private profile, I think you'd be pretty safe as long as you know the friend's you're accepting.
And try telling your parents the pro's of MySpace, like being in touch with friends and stuff. Like if you miss a day of school, you can ask one of your friends for your missed assignments through MySpace

get one and set it on private. the ONLY way a person can get to your profile when it is on private is if that person requests to be your friend and you physically accept them as a friend. so don't accept strangers.
note that if you're under 18, it will automatically be private. if you want it to be private longer, there's an option under account settings that allows your profile to be private no matter what.

My kids have MySpace accounts, and can definately tell you a con - All those sites they go to to get free layouts, codes, comments, etc..... they fill your computer up with spyware and trojans. I hate that. I have had sooo much trouble with my computer because of that!
