Use your imagination - it can go anywhere and do anything and be anyone you want.

Use your own experience - you have a life and you can use that as something to write about.

Be original if you can.

Read widely - see how other writers do it. Then go away and forget what you read - what inspired you will stay anyway and you can use that as a springboard to 'take off on your own'.

But the most important thing above everything else - you have to want to write. If that spark is not there, then find something else to do.

Oh, and a grasp of spelling and the rules of grammar don't hurt either, but they aren't as important as some people seem to think.

Read a lot.
Pay attention to the writing skills of others.
Start writing the kind of stuff you'd like to be reading and then find a good editor in your own circle of acquaintances.

Using a spell-check is my first piece of ADVICE.

Otherwise, you need to ask a more specific question about WRITING skills, because the topic is too general.
