she needs to have time to do this effectively - and must have patience.
She must start by not doing a 'leaving the house' ritual. Don't do the same thing each time - the dog knows that her picking up the keys and then her coat (for example) is her leaving the house ritual. Make changes to that. Then leave the house and immediately come back in. Be quiet and not too Over The Top with the dog upon your arrival.
Again go outside the house. This time wait 30 seconds and go back in. Keep your coat on. sit down.. read a magazine.
Go out again. 2 minutes - go back in. Go upstairs.
are you getting the picture? keep doing that for as long as it takes - Break the dog's routine so that it no longer gets anxious - it will learn that when the owner leaves the house it is not the end of the world - the owner will come home again.
Another thing you can do is to rig up an air-horn (somehow) so that whenever the dog tries to chew the couch, a loud screech happens. The dog wont like it and will get the message quickly.
Take the dog for lots of walks so that it is tired and not bored.

I love this. Thanks. First-sorry your friend is having trouble. There is a reason why the dog is behaving this way. All dogs need plenty of exercise, some breeds need more than others. Next, rawwhide chews are not good- it doesn't something to their digestion. My dog, a Lhasa Mix gets runny stools every time she eats one, so I don't give it to her anymore. Theres other toys and treats more appropriate. Next, I don't like the cage either, but IT WORKS WONDERS! Of course, Cesar Milan, the dog whisperer is always good for informaton. You can't go wrong with these suggestions! If your friend tries to correct the dog way after the deed of riping the couch apart- the dog doesn't know what he/she did wrong.

lol -- sorry -- yet before everything, i think fantastically specific he would not have a rott/gsd/lab and a jr in there and be the dimensions of a jr. If he's black & tan then possibly he has some Lancashire heeler in him or something. different than for crating if it particularly is an prolonged time, are you now not waiting to close him in a room the place he won't be able to get get admission to to the window, or to manage the room so the sofa isn't close to the window in any respect.

That sounds like possible separation anxiety. That is caused by a medical disorder that she needs to discuss with her veterinarian. There is a medication that can help tremendously (IF used in conjunction with behavioral modification therapy...which includes crating as one part of it), if he's a candidate for it. That combination has been very successful in correcting the problem, and thus preventing the euthanasia of a LOT of dogs. The medication won't do it all by itself, however.
Have her read the FAQ at this website before she goes to the appointment:http://www.clomicalm.novartis.us/
ETA: Henalbenal posted the beginning part of the behavioral modification therapy just above....about 2 minutes before my post. LOL. :-)

SO your friend is going to let her dog run her house?....She has to be the leader here. Buy him a crate and he will soon get use to it and love it. it will be his safe place when she is gone and he will eventually get to where he will go in it alone without her having to put him in it...
A crate is not cruel, it`s alot safer than letting them run the house when they are alone. Your friend is very lucky that that's all he has chewed on. It could have been an electrical cord and be dead or chew something and choke while she is gone.
For my dogs safety I would never leave him to run lose in the house while I was out. Put something safe in his crate to chew on when he is alone.

if your couch has spots already chewed, the only way is to watch or block off that area when you are not home; mine did this over and over; if I put a slipcover on it ; it was fine; bought new couch and she didn't touch it; I wouldn't trust her alone with the couch if this is the case; dogs are so smart and they will wait to the right moment and continue where they left off if there is already a weak spot there; supervision is the only real way to prevent destruction of the couch.

well your only other option would be to put a muzzle on your friends dog i know it may sound mean but trust me they end up getting the point after so long of having the muzzle on the dog they will get it in their head that they cant chew on anything i know this because i had to do this to my black lab and she was chewing on everything and now she don't cause i had to put the muzzle on her.

Tell your friend to buy a puppy crate and keep the dog in there. Add a bed-pad and some toys.
