By the way, I am asking this for a freind. I detest smoking and would never consider starting.

It varies person to person - my strong cravings pass after about 3 weeks.
My mum still gets occasional cravings even 10 years on - but they are very managable and soon pass.
If you are planning to give up, good luck :)

I will admit that even after eight years of not smoking, I STILL have dreams that I am smoking. I wake up either being terrified that I started smoking again, or feeling like I just found my best friend again. I have always said that if I ever came down with a terminal disease, the first thing I would do is pick up a smoke, but in all honesty, I don't think I really would. Use all the resources you can to quit, personally, I used the patch and absolutely swear by it. I had no physical withdrawal symptoms at all. Well, except for the smoking dreams that is. Best thing I ever did. So, to answer your question, the cravings last as long as you let them. You will replace the smoking craving with something else. Just choose a good replacement.

Natural Quit Smoking Magic

The cravings never really do go away, they do decrease however. I gave up smoking almost 10 years ago and now and again, I still fancy a cigarette and that's usually when I'm at home on my own, so instead of giving in to temptation , I drink a glass of fresh orange, the vitamin " C " reduces the craving and in a few moments, it goes away. I hope this information is of use to you and I wish all the good luck, if you are trying to stop smoking.

Hi,

Great post! Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, and I thought I wasn't addicted!

Here's what I tried before finding success: hypnosis, those fake cigaretts, the nicotine patch, and group therapy....none worked.

I finally tried this HERBAL patch I bought 6 months ago on the net. They claim a 97% success rate. Well, it worked! They had a sweet deal which was a free 10 day trial for only $3.95 including shipping (it's regularly $53 for 10 days)!!

I don't know if they still have that deal, but it's worth a try.

Its really an individual thing. The cravings can be short lived or longer. The psychological cravings can be more powerful than the physical and harder to manage.Nicotine is out of the system 72 hours after quitting and then the cravings really kick in.It can be really hard to deal with this unless your friend is absolutely determined to quit.Tell her good luck as it is singularly the best thing she can do to improve her health.

I gave up 9 years ago and still occasionally feel the need to light up! Ain't yet though cos I can't face going back through withdrawal or having people ignore me cos I stink of smoke. Smoking is less acceptable now and I'm proud I gave up. Some people say they can't give up but I think that's an excuse for "I'm too lazy!" or "I'm too scared to live without my comfort blanket!" NO ONE HAS EVER REGRETTED GIVING UP but many people regret starting again! I hope I never do but, with any addiction, I don't automatically assume I won't.
