If you are on meds, take them regularly.

Don't watch any movies or documentaries on the subject. I'm not kidding, tics are catchy! It may sound crazy, but it's true. If you start watching someone with certain tics, you will start doing them yourself. I have had it happen to me and I have heard of it happening to others.

Try not to think about it. I find when I think about my tourette's, I'll start ticing. But when I don't think about it, I can be ok for a while.

If you don't know about it already, there is the Tourette's Syndrome Association website. http://www.tsa-usa.org
They might have some helpful info too.

Good luck, honey!

EDIT:
For all of you uneducated people who seem to associate Tourette's with uncontrollable swearing...I'd like to inform you that you are thinking of something called "Coprolalia". Most people with Tourette's do not have that. So before you go spewing any more idiotic comments, concider yourself informed and your ignorance is now inexcused.

I take Cymbalta and it stops my mind from racing so much. My main tic is sniffing. I had a lot of others when I was younger. I take Cymbalta because it also helps with fibromyalgia pain. If I had my choice of medicines, I think I would start with Strattera, a nonamphetamine medicine for ADHD. Most antidepressants help the mindracing and tics also.

Tourette syndrome is an anxiety disorder and in same family as obsessive compulsive disorder, ADHD and many others. When family studies are done, all of these things show up. It is not really rare. I see people with it all the time that don't know they have it. I remember seeing Billy Bob Thornton at an awards show when he didn't know the cameras were on him. He has the classic eyeblinking tics of someone with Tourette syndrome.

Recently I worked with a young TS sufferer. I was impressed by the way he would turn his verbal tics into coughs or greetings. In fact he was about the most popular person in the town because he had greeted just about everybody and everybody had greeted him back.

While in public, I find that if I treat my son "normally", that others will follow suit.

At home, he can tic without comment from others. We try to keep our home as stress free as possible, as this helps to reduce tics.

He is treated with the same love and respect as everyone else. He has chores and homework, just like everyone else.
