My female cat hasn't yet been spayed, she is a little over a year old. She goes into heat every so often (you know the deal), and she is in heat right now. Earlier today my male cat was on top of her, both in "position." He wasn't moving in a humping motion or anything (or moving at all, really). He has done this sometimes (jumped on top of her) when he is playing, and she usually pushes him off or I will see him (play) biting at her. This time he wasn't doing anything, they were just sitting there (him on top of her).

But he isn't even 6 months old yet -- he was estimated to be 2 months when I got him, so he would be 5 months if that estimate was correct. When do male cats begin? My female cat started only recently, and she is more than twice his age!

Thanks for your help.

Getting her "fixed" is not a right or a wrong thing. Purely opinion, and I said nothing about unwated animals.

This question was out of curiousity -- I didn't know a cat so young could go into heat. If you're going to "answer" a question, answer the question. :)

Thanks for the other responses.

Cats become sexually mature at around six months old. However kittens even only a couple of months old naturally appear to "get in position" when they play, it is a part of their development and instincts.

My stud boy fathered his first litter of kittens at 6 & half months old ... however, a previous boy didn't really get interested in girls until he was well over a year old. It seems to depend on the cat.

A good way to tell whether or not it is still play is to see if he is holding onto your back of your female's neck with his teeth ... if he isn't then it's probably still some sort of play.

You'll be able to tell when he is trying for real, along with holding on with his teeth, he'll be maneouvering with his feet, while slightly curving his body, to get into position. If he's a lot smaller than her, this will involve treading with his feet on her back as he fails to find the right place. He'll look really odd & you'll realise straight away what he's up to.

Male cats don't have 'heats' - they're generally willing, ready & able all the time ... once they get the hang of what they're doing.

Unless you plan to breed from them, I'd suggest getting them neutered now... otherwise, in a few months, you might have to make room for a few more cats.

YES, getting your cat neutered is the RIGHT thing. If you care about your pets at all and are educated even a TINY bit...you would know that getting them neutered is the RIGHT thing. If you don't want to care for your cats...then DON'T own pets! Give them to someone more knowlegable than yourself. Making that statement PROVES you are not fit to be a pet owner.
