Then why do so many Christian denominations today forbid the consumption of it, saying it is sinful? Did Jesus sin by drinking it on many occasions? The water back then was not considered safe to drink and they didn't have the knowledge that we have today of boiling it to purify it, thus the miracle of the water into wine at Cana. If water was truly safe to drink, there would be no reason at all for Jesus to perform that miracle.

All wine contains alcohol. Even "nonalcoholic" wine contains alcohol if you read the fine print on the label.

It's debauchery that is a sin. Consumption of wine is not a sin but the excess consumption of win is always a possibility when drinking so they choose to refrain and call anyone that partakes a sinner because their God is too wimpy to keep them from debauchery.

i think you should start using limiters -- protestant christians in the united states are opposed to drinking. this in part caused the great constitutional debachle called prohibition and they still haven't dropped it. it stems from a huge flaw in the foundation of protestantism and the work "profane" in the old church profane simply meant it wasn't sacred -- enter some psychopathic intollerant puritans and everything that isn't sacred damns you straight to hell -- please see salem witch hunts et al right up to the rise of the evangelical church which is busy working on yet another constitutional ban involving gay marriage. themes are starting to repeat. did you notice nobody ever mentioned what is probably ted haggards greatest sin? extortion of monies from grandmothers to pay for sex and drugs? where is jesus to throw out the money changers when you need him?

history wine played a HUGE part in the catholic church in celebratrions and representations of holy blood. The protestants of course had to deny catholic celebrations and became a rather grumpy bunch. the puritans took this about 1000 steps further. anything that might lead to any profane activity was profane. fundamentlists don't play go fish because it is the gateway card game to gambling. how many times have you heard don't smoke the hemp because you will end up a crack addict in jail or dead? faulty logic breeds faulty logic. oh back to the wine thing. well i think you can figure out by now wine will probably make you a liberal california homo hippy. just say no. of course there is nothing in biblical that says don't be a liberal california homo hippy unless you read protestant translations.

The drinking of wine itself is not a sin. The bible says, to be sober and not to get drunk or drink in excess. Also, the wine that they drank in their days was not fermented to the level we drink it on. They added water to the grape juice to reduce and dilute the fermentation. In addition, not all people back in Jesus's day drank polluted water. They drank mostly well water. Well water has natural minerals which act as a purifier. So, when people drink well water they do not get sick. As for the miracle at Cana, you are missing the point. Jesus did not turn the water to wine so they could have wine to drink, but the Jewish wedding was symbolic of the marriage of Christ and the Church and it was to be celebrated with the best.

Drinking wine is not sinful; it's gluttony that's sinful. The Bible says a little wine is good for the stomach. However, everything should be done in moderation. It's sinful to drink to excess just as it's sinful to eat to excess. The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and to jeopardize the body's health by excessive eating or drinking is wrong.

Some people need a highly structured way of life that is enforced from the outside. They are everywhere not just in churches. Sorry if they offend you it is because they are too weak to just listen to the Spirit and follow the Spirits lead and they get feeling anxious when they see things they might abuse so easily attainable.

Alcohalics who go on the wagon act very similarly.

Wine in scripture is wine, and those who say differant must not care much about twisting scripture. There is a scripture they could use but apparently are not bright enough to find it. This scripture put the consumption of alcohal in it's proper perspective. There are people in every group who do these things it is too bad these busybodies all go to the same church, that is one of the results of no accountability and not being in one accord. We are just weak I guess, poor witness huh?

There are no sins, except the evil that is done to other people. Each of us is free to dance, drink wine, masturbate, wear clothes of our own choosing, love whomever we want, and do anything else that is not harmful to other people. For some reason, people in organizations like to control other people, telling them what they can and can't do, what they can and can't drink, etc. Jesus preached toleration and forgiveness, but those qualities are all too rare today among many people in organized religions. It would be nice if people quit focusing on "sin" and focused more on treating other people well and accepting their differences.

Clean drinking water was impossible to find in quantities to sustain a city. Grapes were squeezed for their juice, and that was the drink of choice because it was so plentiful.

But to suggest that the wine of then, and the wine of today with it's high alcoholic content are the same is just not good research.

Everyday table wine was not aged to promote the alcoholic content like it is today, except for specific celebrations. (Imagine! They had grape juice AND wine back then!)

Yes, indeed Jesus drank wine, but the bible admonishes us to do everything in moderation, and to the glory of God.
In the same vein, it also admonishes us against drunkenness.
Even in revelation it mentions the great harlot (False religion) as being drunk on the wine/blood of those she is responsible for killing.
As to Jesus performing miracles, they were to demonstrate he is the son of God. He used God's powers to do all his miracles.
Remember he was NOT a God until his father made him one after his death.

Christian, and I drink wine. It's not forbidden. As with anything, you're not supposed to over indulge.
