Just adding something here... reading through a few of the answers most of who say YES and I certainly agree with that! But one person mentioned that it's not the clothes it's the person inside (ans also stupidly mentioned banning slippers!!!), maybe so but they are Muslim's and I am sorry if I sound racist or whatever brush you may want to tar me with but the fact of the matter is Muslim in UK, Muslim in Middle East, Muslim in US, Muslim anywhere, most of them are out to do the same thing, kill off the Westerners and that means YOU! And they won't just stop at taking themselves out in the process but they will take out their wives, their sisters, their mothers, their children and unborn children if they have to. It really is time to nip the whole situation in the bud and put a stop to it all...

Sorry went on a bit there, but I do however feel very strongly about this subject and the safety of my own family and myself whilst remaining to live here in the UK.

Adding further after reading yet another answer... Believe it or not but YES most Muslims are taught to kill Westerners and that is coming straight from the horses mouth. I know of many many people who work in Middle Eastern countries, some who are very close to me and the Muslims all openly tell them that that is their main sole purpose in life, when they are asked to do so! So, don't you go telling me that it's all bullsh!t cos in all honesty it's the truth.

The veils...the hajib...whatever they call it...that is not over the top....its not unattractive or anything like that. No more severe than what the Amish have on their heads.
But BURQA???
I live in SEATTLE and just a couple of weeks ago I saw woman in store with FULL BURQA. A Black Burqa.

That is way too alien.
If woman are going to wear something like that then I guess she might as well face the consequences.
LIKE....
Forget about a job in retail or customer service.
(unless of course it over the telephone).
And.....maybe the banks aren't real thrilled about hooded figures walking through door.
surveillance camera ain't much good if you can't see face at least... ....so how can they ID if there is a problem?
Same for the ATM camera.

Are they going to refuse to be photographed for drivers license photo?
And ...if not....will they refuse to let cop see face if stopped?
What do they do if they have to show face to cash a check?
They gotta check against photo ID.

I Don't mind accommodating people a little bit.
But I sure would not want to have to work around woman in full burqa.
And sure would not be happy to see working cash register at supermarket.
or driving the bus.

Hajib OK...
burqa??...fine...do want you want but don't expect me to happily adjust ...cause I just won't deal with person in burqa....period...I see burqa behind the counter....I walk out.

IT'S CREEPY

I agree that the burqa should be banned. And I was about to write an entire page on why I agree.

But then I read your question again and saw : "but the fact of the matter is Muslim in UK, Muslim in Middle East, Muslim in US, Muslim anywhere, most of them are out to do the same thing, kill off the Westerners and that means YOU!"

And that stuff stops me from writing. Do you really think that most Muslims are out there to kill you? See, that's the kind of thinking that creates war............... very dangerous ..........

I quote one more: "It really is time to nip the whole situation in the bud and put a stop to it all..."

What are you suggesting, kill them all? Send them all off to concentration camps and gas chambers?? Wow.........

It can't be enforced in this country (UK) because no law as been passed banning it! And unlike the Dutch i can't see our gutlass government even trying to ban it! I believe the Dutch have done all the relevant checks with the EU to make sure it's legal.
Regarding wearing gloves and hats or veils in Christian churches, this practise went out very many years ago. The only time you see women wearing hats is at weddings and funerals!
To me wearing a burka or veil is like some one wearing a balaclava, scary. To my mind these people are just trying to force Islam and their culture upon us, because they don't like ours! But of course they like some of our culture, like social security, family allowance, free medical treatment. All Muslims seem to do is moan moan moan, gimmee, gimmee, gimmee. And the government say yes sir, 3 bags full sir. And they still demand more. Yet you very rarely hear Hindu's or sheiks or Asian Christians moaning!

Tough call. If there weren't so many "Extremists" (read terrorists who are Islamic) would it REALLY be an issue? What if it were a Jew with his Yarmulke or a Christian with his Cross pendent around his neck, would you outlaw these signs of faith as well? Or, is it just that it hides their faces and you/we find this distressing? Personally, I think that when you move to a new country and adopt it as home (were you leaving to make a better life elsewhere?), then you should try and assimilate into that new culture as much as possible. If you don't want to assimilate, then why move there?

I beleive the french have as well. This is a good idea because it does not draw attention to an individual based on their religion. In the times we are living in there is a great deal of fear and hate towards muslims due to terrorism. In a way this ban protects innocent people from hatefull people.

Absolutely. In Belguim the burqa has already been banned in 5 cities including Antwerp. Reading other comments it appears that France and Italy have already banned this religious dress, I imagine the UK will eventually follow suit

We don't live in a country where we seek legally to control dress modes. Our freedoms are why the wearers of the burqa are here! Any attempt at legislation would likely fail but time will sort it out. We no longer live in a country where women are controlled by men either. It's only a matter of time before they realise their power and throw off the yoke.

No.

What if the Dutch banned hoodies?

Or slippers?

Or dressing gowns?

It's not the clothes that matter; it's the person inside...and it's a mistake to tar every feather with the same brush!

Have they banned them or is it a proposal. I suspect that when taken to court it will be found as an unreasonable infringement of a persons rights or an invasion of religious freedom.

I think the reasoning behind them is deficient but so are most religious edicts on clothing. Are women not still required to wear hats and gloves in Christian churches?

Anyway, banning something that is "religious" only results in conflict and unrest. Why create the aggravation.
