Hi Zuli, I am a member of an esoteric branch of Freemasonry, American Co-Masonry, and we admit women and men of all races, religions (you must profess to believe in a Supreme Being), and walks of life. You must be at least 21 years of age, of good character, and wish to improve the world by improving yourself.

This is not about going to Heaven; this is about making the world better here. What good is preaching about how good it is going to be in Heaven when you let kids starve, stay crippled, or suffer burns needlessly? Do not hide behind Gospels written hundreds of years after an event to justify doing nothing!! I am so sick of that. Honestly. Freemasonry is not a religion. It is a gradual awakening of the virtues of living right, right now: Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. You tell me that is wrong? OK. I can hangout with my Masonic Brothers.

I have been in Lodge with Brothers who are lawyers and poodle groomers, Brothers who are Christian and those who are Buddhists, Brothers who are from Cameroon and those from Minnesota. I know the woman who is the topmost officer of my Order and I know the person who is newest in my Lodge. You know what? I would give any of them a kidney of mine if they needed it and we matched.

So those of you who live online, who read about life but think that getting involved is tough, understand this: Freemasons helped build lots of things that are mostly democracies and hospitals. And helping others helps yourself. If not in Masons, find something else to do that involves yourself in helping this world...at least for one day.

First of all the answers I have seen here are the most common that I usually expect to see. The ones where they know all the answers about what Freemasons really are, but yet they do not have a clue.

Now to answer your question. Freemasonry is thought to stem from the ones who helped to build King Solomons Temple which was erected and dedicated to God (1 Kings KJV). Those that built it was known as a masonic guild, or trade union, just like the UMWA or other labor unions that we have today. There was three levels to this trade which were Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craftsman, and Master. We have similar levels in most trade labors today such as Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master Carpenters, Electricians, etc...

Back during this time there were no time cards or ID cards to tell who was who, so they came up with a plan. Each level had its own grip, or handshake as we know it, and a password. This was to ensure that each got paid for the level that they were deserving. These were kept secret because they didn't want an Entered Apprentice getting Masters pay undeservingly. It also kept them from travelling until they reached Master level.

At the Master level a mason was allowed to travel to other jobs and work as a Master Mason, much like a Master level certified trade worker today.

Masonry today, also known as Freemasonry, is a fraternity (usually only men) that promotes faith, charity, and bettering yourself as a husband, father, etc...

They still practice some of the same traditions such as the three levels with their own grips and password, and you are only allowed to travel (visit) other lodges when you reach the 3rd degree (Master). The reason for the secrecy is mainly because of the tradition.

The other key thing to freemasonry is free will as which is what many religions base faith upon. They do not recruit, but one must ask to be a mason. Also you must believe in a Supreme Being, and it is usually stated that one must profess a belief in God. If you choose to believe God is called Allah, or Jehova then that is fine, as long as you believe he is the one and only God, and creator of the universe.

They also express a strong belief in faith. Now anyone of any denomination can join, but if one is to follow the tract to the Knights Templar (York Rite) then you are asked to profess a belief in Jesus Christ as your savior.

Now I will admit there are some people who belong to this organization that are not the model people, but we can say that about all religions out there. It just proves that no one is perfect, just forgiven.

I am a very strong Christain and I feel very strong in my faith, and I will say 100% that I do not feel that the Masons are evil. I do believe that they try to promote brotherly love, and religous growth. I have met many pastors (from all denominations) that feel that if it wasn't for Masonry they would never have gone to the pulpit.

So....believe what you will, it is free will, but that is what I know about Freemasonry...the rest is SECRET...LOL

The free masons originated way back before the Knights Templar but become more prominent during the time of the Templars and the Crusades.
This was a Holy time for the Church of England so they reintroduced the Notion of the Brotherhood which dated back to ancient Rome.
This Brotherhood was responsible for guarding an Ancient secret which involved Christ.
Its everything you have seen in the movie The Davincci Code .
Did Christ live out his years and not go to the cross?
Did Jesus marry and have children which would mean a holy blood line to this day.
The Free Masons no the whole truth about about the holy grail and the blood line of Christ and also who the living desendence are today .
The masons are Not Evil but they are very secretive and mysterious and they do hold the key to alot of world secrets today which we as the general populace have no idea of what is going on.
Rumours have it that Jack the Ripper was himself a member of the freemasons.
Who knows? We will never know?
I do know this.....My grand Dad was a free mason.

The Freemason as a hole are neither good nor evil though the organization dose strive to do good things. The Shiners, as in the Shrine Circus are a branch of the Freemason organization. As with any organization with humans in it you have good and bad Freemasons. I know a few of them they are teachers, doctors, judges and police officers. Their doctrine though secret is based, at least in part, on the old testament bible and a Hebrew text known as the Kabala.

I have been asked to join twice.
You get a nice welcoming pack with info about what they do!
Basically a bunch of guys (stag) that form a club that allows them to screen members and weed out the chavs (UK). I did NOT pursue membership - as I know I would fail the belief in supreme being test and vaguely object to stag organisations as such. I think they are basically harmless and a lot less interesting than their history would have you believe.

I think membership is almost compulsory if you are an estate agent... now talk about evil!

freemasons started as a social group for masons. All the masons were men so it has evolved into a men only social group. When the masons were founded they had secret handshakes, meetings etc. in order to protect the secrets of their trade. Masons have been able to incorporate their beliefs into society because at one time they were the people that did the masonry work.

I believe the masons are good. People often do not like groups like them because of the stories that surround what happens inside meetings. With secrets people make up stories for reasons why something happens or things they don't know. Like in ancient time Zeus threw lightning bolts but we have discovered it is the weather. With the masons there are more stories than truth of what the really do.

Most of them are very "good" people. They do a lot of "good" things, like the Shriner's Hospitals, for instance. To bad being "good" will not get them into Heaven.
They are a cult that on the surface is a really "good" organization, but once you get into the higher ranks of the Shriner's, which is the higher ranks in Freemasonry, you learn about the secret codes, Gods supposed secret name, the blood oaths, and all the other false teachings that is Freemasonry.
The Government of the USA owes them billions of dollars, and the pyramid with the all seeing eye on the back of the one dollar bill is one of their symbols.
They built the monuments in Washington DC and that is why the Washington Monument is in the shape it is. It is a phallic symbol that is supposed to be representative of a mans penis, and the superiority of a man.

I have 2 uncles that are active, 1 cousin that is a former Mason, and my Dad is a former Mason.

Evil, they are connected to the knights templar. I did research on both. The initiation is a noose and a dagger to the throat. Theres a child pornography ring involved in some of the chapters. There have been murders but not within the last 50 years. They attend anti abortion rallies. im not kidding. WHy is it male only? Because the men involved are chavanist pigs that believe women belong in the kitchen and not in a group.

It's an organisation that calls for its prospective members to already have a certain amount of material prosperity and good standing in the community before they can join. The costs of membership are high and effectively add to the self-selecting narrowness of the membership: lodge membership fees, costs of regalia, costs of books and teaching materials that may only be ordered (at prohibitive price) theough the organisation, and the incidental social costs of Freemasonic membership, can easily run into many thousands of pounds (or dollars). You may be sure that no relief or discount is given to a poor person who shows spiritual or intellectual promise. These two factors - people may only be invited to join by existing members, combined with the need to invest several thousands of pounds in one's membership - can readily be seen to limit membership to only a small segment of society (affluent, middle and upper middle class, professional class members already earning more than median salaries)

As a parellel, imagine what might happen if your Church started charging a yearly membership fee of several thousand (in addition to the collection at the service); insisted you wore special Sunday robes at a cost of another several thousand; and the only place you could buy the Bible, the hymn book, the Book of Common Prayer, et c, was via the Church bookshop at £300 per volume...

The suspicion grows that, recruiting from such a small base, Freemasonry is a means for alpha males to recognise and reinforce each other's place in society, make deals in private, and at worst for improper associations to be made in secret.

An example of an "improper association" - in the 1930's, Germany's great army generals and their British and French counterparts had many Masons in their ranks. It is entirely possible that even afte the outbreak of war, men such as Panzer General Heinz Guderian and Britain's General Ironside met as "brother masons" in Lodges in neutral countries. In fact, Ironside was refused active commands after 1939 because of his continued associations with German generals and fascist notables!

Other "improper associations" - the London Masonic lodges where corrupt policemen routinely met brother masons who were highly placed in the criminal underworld....

Masonry is not "evil" in itself but it allows scope for corruption, for people to meet in a secret deniable place for nefarious ends that would not stand analysis in the light of day, and for the alpha male on a high salary to get together in private and work out new and original ways for screwing the rest of us...

numerous demoninations have investigated the free masons and declared them an anti Christian cult yet many protestants and pastors particularly in the South seem to like being members

There are many good books on the subject, the push a gospel of good works and forbid using the name of Jesus in their meetings...Christians should steer clear of membership in the Masons
