Most of the popular brands - PG Tips, Tetley's etc. are based on a blend of Assam and Darjeeling. Hmm, lovely...
As for Earl Grey; it's purported to be a "breakfast" tea; but it is a very mild (and to me insipid) tea; far more suited to afternoon tea than breakfast - when you need a bl**dy good Assam jolt!

I am not sure, but when our daughter and son-in-law visited us from Britain in the summer, they found it very difficult to get a good cup of tea. They definitely did not want orange pekoe. They looked for "black tea" and couldn't find anything in the regular brands that came close. They considered Earl Grey disgusting. They finally found something close at a bulk food store - loose tea bags, no brand, called simply "black tea".

The most popular would be the one who spends the most on advertising in the media.
But nowadays with peoples taste differs, they are gearing towards loose tea and more and more people are drinking green tea especially with its health benefits eg could help slimming , not only that factor the tea actually is a very refreshing drink , it is a fact that loose tea is the second most popular drink in the world after water.

I love PG Tips and Scottish Blend and I just tried a new kind called Williamson and it was good too. A breakfast tea, I think.

I think PG Tips claims to be the most popular, but Twinings is the official provider for Her Majesty I believe! Go royal, is what I say!
