Cats will be all over the place if you do not put them in a carrier. I know because that is what mine do if they are loose in the car. There are some dogs small dogs who will not sit next to you and have to be up in your lap. I guess it depends on the dog and what they are used to doing. Cats are curious by nature and have to be exploring while dogs are more settled for the most part.

Sorry to be a party pooper but ALL pets should be secured in the back of the vehicle. Cats should be in a carrier because they could cause an accident by getting under the driver's feet or distracting the driver etc. Dogs should be in the boot (trunk) with a properly fitted dog guard to stop them hurtling forward in the event of an accident and hitting the driver or other human passengers from behind. Harnesses are obtainable from pet shops for dogs where it is not possible to fit a dog guard.
We all love our pets but this is one instance when we simply have to put ourselves and our own safety first.

Dogs will obey commands and will sit still. Most cats don't like cars and will jump all over the place and get in the way of driving so need to be in a secure place.
