It all depends on where you go because schools are different in their philosophies and rules as to when children can start in a certain group of children.

For the most part, children who are in the age range of 2.5 - 4 would be preschoolers, but there won't always be a spot available for the child to move up into that age group if the class has a full teacher:child ratio.

The supervisor of any centre should be able to tell you their preschool ages and if there are spaces in those rooms.

I live in Manitoba, Canada and work in a preschool where the ages are 2 - 6. we have two groups (older & younger) and children attend all day. Nursery school programs here are for 3 1/2 - 4 year olds and are only 2 1/2 hour sessions.

Preschool starts at 3, they need to be fully potty trained to attend 2 days a week for 4 hours. Then at 4 they go 3 days a week for 4 hours as well.

The typical age is 3, most genuine pre-schools, not daycare, expect that the child is completely potty trained. Many pre-schools start a 3 year old class at 2 days a week, for only 1/2 days. Then the 4 year old class is 3 days a week for only 1/2 days. Some have requirements of when the child turned 3 for example, if your child turned 3 in January, they wouldn't start pre-school until the next school year. But this isn't the case for all schools. If it's everyday all day it's not pre-school it's day care and while they may have pre-school activities daycare isn't the same as pre-school.

Kindergarten cut offs very from state to state and sometimes even school district to school district. In AZ they must be 5 by August 1. While where we used to live in VA was in Novemeber. And where we lived in California was September.

Usually about 3 or 4 years of age. My little brother started when he was 3. So that's probably right.
