This is one way how to go to Confession

+ Get yourself ready by making your examination of conscience.

+ After the priest greets you with the Sign of the Cross make the Sign of the Cross and say: “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. These are my sins…”

+ Tell your sins simply and honestly to the priest. Don’t be embarrassed.

+ When you are done listing your sins please say: “…I am sorry for these sins and all the sins I can’t remember.”

+ Listen to the advice the priest gives you and accept the penance from him. Then make an Act of Contrition for your sins:

My God,
I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong
And failing to do good,
I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help,
to do penance,
to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Amen.

+ The priest will then conclude with the words: “Your sins are truly forgiven, Go in Peace”. You respond: “Thanks be to God.”

+ Perform your penance as soon as possible.

With love in Christ.

EWTN Catholic Q&A
confession
Question from isaac on 07-02-2003:

Hello,

This perhaps is going to seem like an absurd question, but I have only confessed once in my life (before my first communion), and it has been over ten years since; I do not know how to confess. My family is not actually very devout, and it is not in their practice to go to confession (so I cannot ask them), but I am trying to get closer to the church, and my first step is to go confess, and I wanted to know how it is done. Thank you.

Answer by Fr. John Trigilio on 07-19-2003:

No problem. First, get a good examination of conscience. I sent one to our EWTN electronic library a while ago. Next, go to a parish where confessions are heard every Saturday afternoon and go early enough that you are there before the crowd arrives. Give yourself at least 15-20 minutes if there is no crowd.

Go into the confessional and say "Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It has been ten years since my last confession and I need some help." The priest will help you and you will leave knowing you did the right thing. Do not wait too long since no one knows the day nor the hour and God forbid anyone should die with an unconfessed mortal sin.

We priests are very familiar with penitents who have not gone in many years as well as the regular (weekly or monthly) ones, too. Only pride and the Devil can delay you any longer. GO this weekend.

Step 1 Go into the confessional box kneel down a shutter will open
and you can see the priest dimly he cant see you its fairly dark and say bless me father for I have sinned .
step two he will say how long since your last confession my child,
Step 4 you tell him .years ago.
step 5 he says and since then to get you to open up
Step 6 you tell your sins
step 7 he asks you are you sorry for all this,... you say yes Father.
step 8 He gives you absolution and penance usually a few Hail Mary's.
step 9 you leave the confessional box

In the Catholic faith, when confessing, you recite the act of contrition, which starts," Bless me father for I have sinned, it has been (weeks or years) since I have been to confession, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee".The priest then asks you to recite your sins. He asks if you are truly sorry for your sins and assigns a number of prayers as penance. You are then good to go until you sin again.

Confession is a useful way to begin a commitment to a better life in the future.

Contact the nearest priest to help you remember. If you would feel better asking another Catholic, go to mass/services and seek the help of another church member.

I would offer assistance but I am not Catholic.

If you are serious and sincere about wanting to go to confession, just do, and while you are in the confessional booth, ask the priest.

Are you worried about loosing face with God or your church? If it's loosing face with God you're worried about, you can confess your sins anywhere. at home, in a bath tube is you chose too.
The Catholic confession is just a formality. They are there to help you confess your sins. Sometimes it's easier to talk them out with another person. It's a good system, but not needed for salvation.
