We are thinking about vacationing there next summer, but have heard horror stories about black flies and other bugs in Alaska in the summer.

The Canadian Rockies are beautiful. Yes in nature you do have to deal with bugs. But if that's what stopping you from seeing the Rockies. Then that sucks. There's so many places you can visit. Like Banff, Kelowna, Pentiction, I can go on forever. It's beatiful in the summer. Nice sparkling lakes, hiking, hot srings, waterfalls. It would be a mistake if you passed up on this chance.
