What are the best/safest neighborhoods to live in/around Albany,NY?

Downtown Albany: The Lark Street area is popular with the student scene. There are some very nice historic buildings just north of lower State Street as well.

I'm particularly fond of Delaware Avenue; the Spectrum movieplex (75% indies and imports, 25% Hollywood), some great Italian delis and a great Vietnamese place are all within walking distance.

As you go further west within Albany city limits, there are lots of nice suburban-ish residential neighborhoods, none particularly historic.

Outside of city limits, there are lots of more cookie-cutter suburbs, plus a few old mill towns mixed in. A couple of these are slowly coming about, but none are as nice as downtown Troy, the 3rd largest city in the Albany region. Troy has been undergoing a massive redevelopment in the past decades, and now has a pretty happening arts and culture scene. A lot of great restaurants, too. It's about 7-10 miles north of downtown Albany; connected by Interstate 787.

For a more small-town historic feel, there is Altramont (pop 1700-ish) or Scotia (similar). Scotia is very close to Schenectady (2nd largest city in the area; it has its plusses and minuses), while Altamont is (thus far) just beyond the suburban sprawl at the edge of the Helderberg escarpment (a small mountainous ridge). Both are about 20 minutes from downtown Albany, 10-15 from the mall area of west Albany.
