spray them with water every time you catch them, they won't do it for long!

I have the same problem but no baby on the way...just the cats jumping on the counter...and I agree with another person who answered, when they smell their food or food in general they get curious. My two kittens are especially bad about jumping on the counter. Keep some antibacterial wipes at the ready to clean the counter surfaces if they happen to jump up there and you may want to find a different area to prepare their food if you use the counter for that. As many times as I tell them no they still get up there. I do not think you can completely break them of the habit but you can at least keep them down as much as possible. Congrats on the baby tho!

One of the reasons they get on the kit counter is out of curiosity.

My kitten, after being fed and happy, jumps on the counter to see what I'm doing or if their are any scraps. They relate it to food.

This has been going on for 2 1/2 months.

I'm doing the water spray, but doesn't work much on my cat. He now knows the word NO, but still gets on it.

I bought some anti-bacterial spray and spray the counter every morning so we can eat on it.

The water bottle has helped many cats and may help yours.

If not, follow some other suggestions here.

How long have they been doing this? The longer they have been doing it the more confused they'll be when they have to stop. When they go on lift them off at once and say "no" sharply, if you see them about to go on shout "no" again. It might take a while but they will learn in time, don't leave any food lying there that will tempt them. You will have to make sure your tops are kept extra clean and maybe use a tray or something which is kept for working with baby's things only.

Hey Now...

I totally agree with the "Spray Water" people.

But ...

What I did was use a water gun...

Spray bottles diffuse the water stream to much
and soakes everything around the cat you are
aiming at...

This cured 3 cats from going on top of the fish tank
and scaring the heck out of the fish!!!

It got to the point that if I just picked up the water gun
they all ran like crazy out of the room...

Good Luck...

Take some cheap old bumper stickers
(Or any adhesive paper)
and remove the paper.Place the sticky sides UP on the countertops that they
jump onto.Be aware though that they are quick learners and will try other places to
jump up to,so you will have to outwit them
with where you place the stickers.
It will probably be kinda funny too the first time it happens so I suggest getting out the video camera!Good luck in your kitty training.

Get a spray bottle for water, whenever you catch them up there spray them, make stomping sounds with your feet and shoo them off... I had this problem too and in a few short weeks they stopped getting on the counter top and moved on to breaking my blinds to get on the window sil... also, keep food and liquid off your counter, that's prob. what they're looking for!

Put water in a spray bottle and every time the cat does something you don't want it to, spray it in the face. Your cat will learn eventually that you do not want it to do that because it gets water sprayed in its face.

the way i teach my cat stuff is to growl at it, give it a slap and maybe throw them across the room for good measure.

It wont work instantly, but their tiny little minds will soon figure it out that this ill treatment is caused by them waltzing onto your nice clean counters

put sticky mouse traps on the counter--- once the cat gets this on its paws it will not jump up again.
the traps are harmless-- get them at the hardware store.
punishment will only drive the cat away from you.
note-- it will give you some comic relief as well

They will go anywere they can smell food, if you've allowed them to do this, then they will continue to do so. You will have to keep them clean all the time with anti-bacteria spray. Or teach them not to do this.
