its basically the British equivalent of koolaid but in liquid/syrup form and without the need to add additional sugar.
It comes in different flavours too and not just orange, anything from blackcurrant to lemon to tropical.

Squash (sometimes called cordial) is a concentrated, often fruit-based, syrup to which water is added. It is also the name of the resulting drink.
Squashes and cordials are common in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, and have a large market share in competition with fruit juices and soft drinks. They are especially popular amongst toddlers and young children. Typically, squash is created by mixing one part syrup with four or five parts water (depending on concentration of the syrup and personal taste) directly into a glass or mug or into a jug. The most common flavours are orange, apple and blackcurrant, lemon, peppermint, mixed fruit, summer fruits, and lemon and lime. Other flavours include peach, strawberry, and kiwi fruit.

The orange squash that children in this country drink is sold in supermarkets. It comes in a bottle and you dilute it with water. It is very sweet and full of chemicals (colourants and artificial flavourings). Not really healthy for children.

Being from different families it is not possible your peppers and squash crossed. It is possible, however, to have gotten a package of seeds that was mislabeled from the distributor. It happens. I once was given a seed packet labeled as radishes which produced the most wonderful turnips I have ever eaten. Good luck and enjoy!
