I don't know where you live, but in my area it is a requirement to license your dogs.

no. The sorts of people who don't look after their dogs, don't train their dogs, and allow them to wander or be a nuisance, won't bother buying one. Only caring consciencous people will do so so it defeats the object.
In this country we have too many laws and I for one don't see why keeping a dog should be penalised and licenced.
We pay way too many taxes as it is and this will simply be another tax. Why not licences for budgies or cat? Howabout a licence to ride a nbike or listen to the radio? It makes just as little sense. What do you think a dog licence would achieve?
What would happen to people like me who have 8 dogs, all rescued, most oldies? Already my feed and vet bills are huge every month. If I had to pay £200 a year (£25 per dog) it would mean that the money was being taken out of the fund I have for vet bills. It's the cost of a spay to me.
Yet the morons down the road on the council estate with a single dog, tied in the garden all day, which goes berserk when it chews it's way off, runs around the village attacking other dogs, crapping on the village green where children play, THEY could afford the £25 a year although they probably wouldn't bother. A licence simply penalises those who do things properly and those who do their best to help dogs in need.If I couldn't afford it, what am I supposed to do with the 4 geriatric (over 10 years old) previously mistreated dogs I have here? What about the 2 which have health problems?

I am a dog owner in the UK. No i dont think we should. Responsible dog owners would buy their licences - just as they look after their dogs properly, keep them on leads, take them to the vet, clear up poo etc and the irresponsible people would just carry on as they do now and avoid paying for the licence. So we would just get hit for more money, and the others would get away with it like they get away with so many other things!

Yes I think we should and you should have to buy one before you purchase a dog. There are two many that are bought and then let loose on the street or given in to dogs homes. I think that they should be £25.oo a year and if you do not have one you get fined and the money given to dogs homes etc. Also I think you should have a disc on the dogs collar saying it has a licence and it should change each year.

If we treat our dog as a member of the family we shouldn't need a licence.

NO/Bio-metric licences are the answer which must be compulsory carried at all times. They would show the dog's paw print and retina scan. They would cost £100 per dog although the government would say the cost would be much less than that.

before purchasing a dog you will have to be checked against the dog abuse register to see if you are a fit and proper person to look after a dog(they are not just for Christmas you know). That cost would be £25.

The newly employed "dog police" with their brand new uniforms of which their will be thousands (cost added to council tax) have the power to summarily stop all people out walking their pooch and demand to see licence, failure to produce results in a fine £40 and 3 points on their licence( 12 leads to withdrawal of licence and dog taken into care,)dog owner marched to nearest ATM and made to hand over money. Dog can be clamped and impounded.

i live in the uk and i think its a great idea.
if this happened puppy farms won't be able to operate and there would be so many more happy dogs. the dog kennels may become overwelmed but i'm sure that this is better for the dogs than being beaten. its a brilliant idea.

Yes! And compulsory training courses for dog and owners! It would cost so much to organise it all though. Bound to be a disaster with people failing to sort their licenses or attend course and paperwork being late etc with unfair fines blah blah blah.

In Indiana we don't have to have our dog's licensed unless we're planning to breed. They are working on passing a law to require microchipping of all animals though to cut down on animals in shelters and people being irresponsible with pets and dumping them they get sick of them.
