Buddha taught there is no individual ego however there is mindfulness-a consciousness which survives bodily death and incarnates in accordance with karmic law. It is better to think in terms of consciousness rather than individual souls or entities when dealing with Buddhism.

See Lord Buddha arrived at a time when there was extinction of values and more of violence towards animals and as such.
The period needed to educate the need to be nonviolent without explaining things in depth.
Citing life as misery and one has the ability to get liberation from it provided he is on the right track of self realisation.
The importance was given to path rather than depth of elements involved for selfrealization.
As for other routes you take hinduism or egyptians,judiasm,etc...
all agree there is life and death.
The basic common thing prevailing inside body called by different names :soul/spirit/atma/etc....
Its true that this is real and it is the one leaving when one dies.
But Buddha didnt want to confuse or make people get into depth,he knew well that once on path towards self exploring he will actually find his identity himself in this basic thing the soul.
So the foremost thing was to mission people on the path so thats iit no need of saying soul.
Is there a need to say to a man that life is there inside same way knowing who you are makes you identity the life inside.
So thats it Hope you are convinced
