Alleve works very well as an anti-inflammatory medication... i had no stomach problems with it like i did everything else (i have 3 gastric ulcers)... however, the more concerning part of your question is that you have been taking illegal narcotic pain medication. no over the counter med is going to kill pain like a controlled substance... the main thing that you need to figure out is this... if the pain is not able to be helped by anything over the counter, you need to find a doctor who will work with you to find something that will lessen your pain. many times a doctor will prescribe a controlled substance (like vicodin) AND something like ibuprofen, alleve, ect and it is important to take both when it is... look at it this way... if you are in pain because your osteoarthritis, alot of that pain is caused by inflammation in your joints.. taking an anti inflammatory will reduce the pain you are in to where you can take less vicodin and still get the same pain relief and it is better for you in the long run. if you only take the vicodin, you are taking more than you have to if you are not taking an antiinflammatory at the same time. when you talk with your doctor, make sure he/she knows that you are taking something like alleve, ibuprofen ect otherwise you will just be branded as an addict as well.... there are other medications besides vicodin that can help with the pain of arthritis though... seriously check with your doctor so you can get some relief

Alleve is good for mild arthritis. Vicodin is addicting, don't take it if it isn't prescribed to you.
See a doc and get a prescription. I use Arthrotec and it works great. I also take Vicodin occasionally.

You need to be careful about taking Alieve too much...the same with Motrin. It can seriously damage the lining of your stomach. Talk to your doctor about prescription anti-inflamitories...which are better than pain killers for relieving the pressure in the joints.
