Here are some real solutions:

salon selectives makes this great product called 'air it out'. it's a green/blue colour in a squirt bottle and you just mist it over your hair and any smell is gone instantly. it's only like 3 or 4 dollars and you can get it at wal-mart or any drugstore.

Take some baking soda and dissolve in water - stand in the shower and pour over your head then rinse the odor will be gone.

I used to get braids when I went to Barbados, so I know how to clean the head with braids.

This is preventative rather than after the fact... If I'm going anywhere smoky, I always spray my hair with Redken Workforce 09 (formerly "Airtight") hairspray. I hate coming home smelling like smoke and it works It locks out humidity, too.
