just smaller dogs... if you were to get a large dog, say like a german shepard or even a malamute, they just wouldnt have enough room to run around in... depends on how small your yard is too... i mean, if your yard is only say 12'x12' you wouldnt want to get anything larger than a yorkie...

I like the site dogbreedinfo.com - - take their quiz for what dogs are right for you.
The size of your yard is only one part of the equation. If you would take the dog for walks/runs outside the yard, the size of your yard might be less important.
Also, what types of dogs do you LIKE? What family situation do you have? Do you want a dog with some guarding capabilities?
dogbreedinfo.com covers these sorts of things before suggesting dogs.

Another idea is to talk to your local animal rescue and see if they have a program to match people with adoptable dogs.

I would say that anything small. Maybe a miniature pinscher or a terrier of any kind. they also have toy dogs that rarely weigh more that 7-8 lbs. if you dont like ankle biters go with a jack russel terrier. They are not only cute but great companions!
