I just adopted a rat terrier last Saturday from a animal shelter but couldnt pick her up till today cause she needed to get spayed,, Last Saturday she seemed heavier and more livelier, now she looks emasated sorry dont know how to spell that word but you can see every bone in her body and she seems very lathargic,,, My question is could the surgery have made her so skinny looking and lathargic acting, every sence we brought her home she has just wanted to lay around and hasnt eat much at all is this normal from getting spayed,,, Im just wondering if there is something more wrong with her im worried about her about not eating and just laying around,,, I hope some can help I have never had a dog that i have ever gotten fixed before so im new to this,,,

She shouldn't have lost that much weight in one week unless something is wrong. Spaying will not make her emaciated in a week. Spaying takes out a few ounces of reproductive organs, nothing that will show up physically.

If you can't see an emergency vet, first thing Monday morning you must do so. In the meantime, keep her hydrated, feed her boiled chicken and rice (50/50) and keep her warm. Watch for signs of distress and dehydration. Good luck and good job adopting!!

Yes, your dog is sick. If there's an emergency vet service in your area, you should take her there. If not, see if you can find a vet on call to take an emergency.

(I am of divided mind about very young animals getting spayed and neutered before shelters allow them to be adopted. I understand why they do this, but on the other hand, it's really hard on a puppy or kitten, a young animal without a fully developed defense against infections. Only one of my cats was spayed as a very young kitten, and she is also the only one who has chronic UT problems.)

I'd say get on the phone ASAP to get your dog some medical help, and meanwhile encourage her to drink. The liquid part of a meaty soup like Campbell's Sirloin Burger would be good to try because the meat aroma may tempt her, and if she'll drink it, that'll get both liquid and electrolytes into her system. Good luck.

I think it's because of the surgery. I've had cats and dogs do this in the past. I'll bet you wouldn't look/act too hot if someone had just removed some of your internal organs. If she doesn't get better in a few days call a Vet. You have to learn to be a responsible pet owner. Keep an eye on her.

No, this is not a normal result from spaying a dog. Sounds like there is an underlying medical issue she needs to have tended to. I would take her to the vet ASAP to have her checked out.

When did they spay her? If they didn't get around to spaying until the day before you picked her up, then she would look thin and just want to lay around. If they spayed her a week ago, then this is not right. She should be up and wanting to play.

Have you spoken to the people where you picked her up at? They should know if this is normal. Your best bet is probably to have her checked over by a vet-just to be on the safe side.

Well this says zero answers, but I doubt that is the case, so I am probably repeating this answer, but take her to the vet silly! She sounds quite sick from your description.

Well, usually when dogs get spayed, they are supposed to get chubbier. Take her to the vet A.S.A.P.
