A guard dog is a dangerous dog to have around (see the link). It sounds like you have a family, so you would probably be better off get an even tempered puppy (regardless of breed) and socialize it properly. This way the dog will be good with your family and friendly strangers. Most dogs have an innate sense of when it is necessary to protect you from intruders - any guard training is just asking for trouble.
If you do want to get into dog training, protection training is a great activity for serious working dogs. I personally would get a German Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd Tervuren, or Belgian Shepherd Malinois if I were to get into something like Schutzhund or French ring training. These dogs, when properly trained, are amazingly well trained dogs, and when not working are great family dogs.

German Shepherds generally have a better temperment and and would be better with children. Either dog can be trained as a guard dog and would be sufficient. I personally have never owned a Rottweiler, but did raise German Shepherds as seeing eye dogs a few years ago.

You do not need a "guard dog" if you bring him/her up right. All of us naturally defends those we love. This non-guard dog attitude is that much more important if you have children. Our Bogie (part Healer and Pit-bull) was raised with devoted love and never snapped at our kids or grand kids for the 17 years of his life. One time my daughter was dating this guy I had concerns about and so did Bogie. One day when she and he were visiting events took place where this guy knew Bogie would have brought him down had I just said the word. Mind you I never trained him to do this, Bogie just knew what he needed to do. This dude got the message and they broke up. My point is, if the dog feels part of the family then he will defend it just like you or you husband would. If you get caught in this big and mean attitude then harm might come to your children like so many others who do not think first.
No on the Rottweiler as to many of them have either harmed, malled, deformed or killed children.

Either breed can be great with children. We grew up with Great Danes in the house (my mother raised GD's for 25 years - AKC & CKC). Any dog can be a good family dog, given that it's breeding is reputable, (find a breeder with good references), and also, females are generally more protective of children than males. IF, and I stress IF... you plan to breed your dog, and have the resources and the time to take care and plan and take care of the dog and puppies, females who have had and cared for at least one litter are generally more protective of and gentle around children.
However, I am not recommending that you get an adult female who has already had a litter. If you want your dog to be protective of your home and your family, the dog should grow up IN your home and with your family. As a loved and cared-for family member.
(We grew up from the time we were 5 with at least 3 Great Danes in our home, and sometimes as many as 17 at one time!) It was definitely an adventure, but a fantastic one! And if anyone had even looked at one of us cross-eyed, all the dogs were at the fence, basically staring them down, saying, these are MY kids... don't even think about it!!

A German Shepherd definately. They are good with kids if brought up around them, more loyal, and far more intellegent. They do shed a lot though, and require some training when they are young, as should any dog.
They tend to choose 1 person as their master and are extremely loyal, but sometiumes suffer from seperation anxiety when the master is away.

I am with the group, I have owned two German Shepards and currently have a Shepard/Collie mix and she is perfect.
Just one thing Shepards are very smart dogs and need lots of stimulation. They don't do well being alone all day. They also get along great with other dogs. My two previous dogs had companions (one had a Beagle and the other a Springer Spaniel).

either will be absolutely fine with children if brought up correctly. if not it could be dangerous but I'm sure if you spend enough time with your dog it will do anything for you, my dog does, i have a collie who is really loyal she grew up with young children and would never hurt any child but is a brilliant guard dog and will not let anyone who she doesn't know near children.

I think both are good dogs, and if from a reputable breeder, both can be great if raised with children. But I'm inclined to think the GSD is going to be more protective of your family. But both dogs will alert if someone comes to your home.
