As long as the jam was made properly it should still be fine - home canned goods can last for years. However, home canning is a very iffy subject and if the process was done without total sanitation that jam could be nearly radioactive.

Honestly, buying jam from the store that you know is safe for two dollars is way cheaper than the hospital bills for getting sick from old, bad stuff. Better safe than sorry - chuck it.

Home made jams are supposed to have wax on top /It keeps it fresher . You can keep Jams a long time. When you open the jar look for watery substance , If it is there it is probably no good. Jam is supposed to be thick..

It still should be good, open it , if it looks and smells good enjoy, if not toss it. When in doubt throw it out. .

I don't think sugary products go bad. I know that oil based products can go rancid, you will know by the smell and taste when somethings rancid, it smells and tastes sour.

If it's never been opened and I'm assuming it's vacumn packed...it can last for several months and possibly years.

If she sealed it properly and it has never been opened - it is probably still good.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but...what kind of friend do you have giving you expired food? He/she trying to "subtly" poison you or give you a crappy time?
