Go ask your son these questions.
I someone put an M-60 to his head and pulled the trigger, would god stop the bullets? If he was in a helicopter and it was shot out of the sky, would god catch the falling craft and place it safely on the ground? If a mortar round was falling down on to your son's position, would god reverse gravity and make it fly back up into the sky?
I'm sure your son doesn't believe god could do any of these things, so why do you? What brings home men from war is TRAINING, and LUCK. Any soldier will tell you... when a soldier faces the moment of truth, he can act or he can pray, and if acting will save his life, and he chooses to pray instead, then say goodbye to the soldier.

this is a hard time for any man. before i left on my first tour i broke up with a girlfriend i was going out with for two months because, i knew i didn't want to put someone i had only been with a couple months through that whole ordeal. i came back and looked at the world completely different but after a while of running around and trying to figure out the world i decided the best thing to do was go on with my life and started to further my education. once i was ordered to return to iraq i did and spent more time than the first time here but finally made my way back to america. the "journey" totally changes people and he is just not the person you know, i'll say that with complete confidence. things that were once important to him may not be anymore. all you can do is be there for him when he needs you and if it doesn't work out it doesn't work out. he may not be looking somewhere else but he also may, coming back is a crazy time and the thing he may just need is time and maybe space. men look at porn that's what they do but it doesn't mean he doesn't love you.

I can't and won't speculate because questions like these delve into dangerous and condemning territory.
To say that your son returned home from Iraq because God was watching over him, is fine in itself, when examing only your situation.
However, when you begin to apply that concept more globally, the unfortunate counter that such a statement contains, is,
"Everyone's son, mother, father, brother, lover, sister, husband, wife, etc..who died in Iraq died either because God didn't really care much about them, or because their faith wasn't strong enough etc..."
That cannot be the case. And so I refuse to speculate along those lines. That doesn't stop me from praying for the safety of people over there, however, I cannot allow myself to think like that.
BTW, I know very much what that must be like, my brother served for a year in Iraq, and after he finishes even more advanced language training, he'll most likely be going back.

You are lucky your son has returned home safley from a place he should not be in the first place. How many innocent people, men, women and children in iraq at the hands of these soldiers will never return to there families. Bush is responsible for their blood on his hands and so are any people who follow him.

I'm very happy for you and your son and your family that he did. But I don't think a god had anything to do with it. I respect your beliefs and in no way want to denigrate them, but in my opinion, any god that has anything to do with creating or controlling a world that we exist in, with so much pain, cruelty, and suffering in it, is a god that is beneath my contempt.

Absolutely not! If you think that way, why then don't all the military come back safely from Iraq? Do you think your son is a better soldier than the others who died and came back missing limbs?

I don't know the answer to that, but I am thrilled for your family! I know this has been hard for you, and that you were so looking forward to the upcoming holiday with him. Best to you, Kerilyn, and to your son. Give him a hug for me,please.
