My two favourite places in the world are South Devon (perhaps a bit bracing this time of year unless you're wrapped round a burning log fire........) or Ross-on-Wye which is extremely beautiful with some fine restaurants and bars. Either way, enjoy!

i'm a Pacific Grove close by, so collectively because it particularly is merely "going homestead" to me once I flow to the folk, the Monterey Peninsula is an astounding region for a romantic weekend getaway. that's one million.5 hours from San Jose (2.5 from SF). quite some B&Bs in Pacific Grove. appealing sea coast. motels in historic Monterey are low value than New Monterey, Pacific Grove, or Carmel. Carmel is amazingly touristy, yet whilst that's what you're searching for, it particularly is great.

you could try lynmouth/lynton in north devon right on the coast. there a hotel called the rising sun with a private cottage you can rent its very romantic lots of nice walks and galleries although pretty cold this time of year but i used to work there and its very pretty you even get mountain goats and seals there and can sometimes see dolphins. its about an hour from barnstapel theres no train in lynmouth/lynton so you have to drive or bus it
hope you have a nice time
