I recently received a preapproved credit card offer in the mail. I applied for it online. When I went back to check the status of my application I noticed on my auto complete that the last digit of my social security number was wrong. I was approved. I called the credit card company about this and they reran the application. A week later I received a denial letter stating the reason was because I had already applied for the card. One day later I recieved the card in the mail. Again I called the credit card company and they said it was no big deal and just updated my account. What I don't understand is how I got this card under another number? I had applied for this card awhile back and was denied. I'm wondering if they had my information in the system and that is why I was approved? I don't know. Maybe somebody can help me with an answer.

If you were denied a while back and then approved later and you state that it was under a different SSN then that would be the reason. When they ran your credit under the different SSN they possibly got the result of you not having any credit at all good or bad being that there would be nothing under your name and that particular SSN. So therefore they decided to approve you I'm guessing because that company will give cards to those with no credit history. The plus for you is that now if they updated your SSN it should report to your actual credit report thus helping your actual credit score. This is one way that people get credit cards when they have a poor credit rating. Hopefully this has been of some help to you.

The ss# is not the sole identifying factor in who you are to the credit card company. A digit off is definitely a common thing to happen. I see this happen alot in the work I do. Somehow the credit report still matches you. Reasons for that would be your name, address, and other identifying information is used when pulling your credit report. They may have noticed the error but it didn't give them someone elses credit report, they did have yours. It was a good move to call them after you got the card to update correct the error. If you're still worried, you can obtain credit reports from Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union once a year for free to look over and make sure everything is correct. Find them online at their website and use their toll free phone # to order your report via an automated system.

It sounds to me that you need to verify that they are reporting the account with under the correct SSN. Unless your credit is very bad or you default on that card, I doubt the correction will result in the account being closed. Call the customer service number on the card and explain what happened. They can help you resolve the issue. I had a similar problem once and was able to fix it over the phone. Someone probably made a typo when entering you application.
