Naw, me neither, but if playing football, I might want the lid for my kit! Balls and hard body parts make for hurting bits on a bad day.
Otherwise, we put the kettle on to boil, no longer hold horses to keep them from running to soon, and certainly do not let them sit on our laps!
But, no need to get out knickers in a twist about it. English sayings are here to stay.
By the way the last time I tried to put the entire kettle on, it got really ar*sed, and accused me of trying to spin it a yarn!
I have to go to the back garden and swing a cat, be back in two shakes of a lamb's tail. A right jiff of a job indeed!

put the kettle on - the stove/hotplate whatever. The term stuck even after more people moved to electric kettles.
