Even news people and public officials will say something like, "just between you and I," or, "The other party met with he and I," when it should be, "just between you and me," and, "The other party met with him and me."

They must have been asleep in English class, or they have had poor models.
Anyone who has studied a foreign language should have learned the difference between an indirect object and a direct object. It seems that people haven't studied grammatical cases, either.
Poor grammar is one of my pet peeves. Fortunately, my friends were awake in class, as were my parents. Rather than overtly correcting people, I model the correct usage and hope they pay attention!

When writing, most people are more aware of the proper usage and placement of pronouns than when they are speaking. Individuals also tend to mimic the verbal mistakes they've heard without being fully conscious of their error.

Maybe they don't know how to speak English correctly. This happens in other languages, too. People get used to speaking the language and forget about its grammar.

My favorite is "she called her and I's names" instead of "she called our names." Don't bother correcting people, they never take it in the spirit it was intended. I used to help my sisters and brothers and now, in our 40's, they insist I was showing off.

Most people completely forget that "me" still is an option and should be used at some points. They figure that because they put themselves last they sound intelligent and are doing it correctly.

If you use "just between you and me" that is for the two people talking to each other. I feel that as long as I know what they mean, it is OK.
