I have a very close, personal relationship with my bladder, which gently wakes me each blessed morning.

My answer would be this: For all intents and purposes of your question, I can easily not believe because it is my subconsious mind waking me up as a result of 1) Homo sapiens being non-nocturnal animals and 2) my mind has been trained for many, many years to wake up at the morning time based on a biological clock which is also held subconsciously.
From there I would probably laugh at the religious zealot who asked me so stupid a question. Of course, it is their ignorance, not mine...

We actually wake up every hour, after our REM cycle is complete. But usually we stay in a state of light consciousness for around 10 seconds until we go back in stage 1 sleep. After our body has repaired itself sufficiently we will stop our REM cycles. Or something could always wake you up, in stage I sleep, while you are technically asleep, it does not take a lot to wake a person up.
