The cabinets are a natural light oak. I have hardwood floors and black appliances. I'm thinking about doing something dark and wondered if anyone had any thougths about this. The house and kitchen are pretty tiny but there is a lot of light. I'm looking at a color called 'tan brown'. Of course I plan to take a sample of the cabinet when I shop for granite. I'm also considering Zodiac or Silestone but am leaning towards granite. I also like soapstone.

Depends on what color the oak is stained. Oak is a wood, not a color, so we need some more info. But , I'd suggest going to Home Depot, Lowes, Menard's, etc and look at countertops. See what colors look good with cabinets of your color.
