If it looks like you have black splinters under the nail it is a fungus infection. Try over the counter topical drops but it is hard to cure.

If it is a dent in the nail or a black blister underneath the nail than the nail got hit and will eventually grow out OK.

it is fungal! Try an antifungal topical cream first, but you may need a prescription pill that takes care of it. But these pills are hard on the liver so you will have to have blood tests drawn before you start the medication and during the course of it, so try the over-the-counter Lamisil first! Good Luck!
