If the dog hadnt eaten for several days before the surgery, then it's possible that he just doesn't have enough waste yet to eliminate.
He may also just not be comfortable or the pain medication may be causing some constipation. Call the vet and touch base with him. Without examining your dog and knowing all the factors, we really can't offer you too much advice without it being a 100% guess. The vet is really the best source of information on this. Good luck to you! : )

I've seen many dogs get into the "position" to do their deed with a cast on. he may take more time for him to be out in the yard to figure it out but just give him some time. if constipation is the issue, your vet should recc something to help. dogs are wonderful creatures being able to balance on 3 limbs and sometimes even 2. good luck and hope he's better soon

this is going to sound strange, so bear with me, and it will not hurt the dog.
Take a PAPER matchstick, (like from a book of matches, NOT a wooden match stick), and gently insert the matchhead into the dog's rear. Just barely. so that the rest is sticking out.
No, I am not sick. Breeders and handlers will do this with a nervous dog before bringing them in the ring to show to empty their bowels, so they will not get nervous and defacate in the ring.
The feeling of it being there will make the dog eager to have a bowel movement, to rid themselves of the annoyance. Also, the tiny amount of sulfur in the matchhead (which will NOT hurt the dog in any way), also acts as a MILD laxative.

You can use a glycerin suppository - child or adult size depending on the dog's size.
Dip it in warm water and insert it & then take the dog a quick walk (or hobble) stop at a place your dog would normally defecate and the glycerin should do the trick.
This is common practice for post operative treatment.

Be sure to ask your vet, but when my dog was constipated, my vet recommended fish oil caplets or a table spoon of vegetable oil. If you use the fish oil capsules, prick a hole in the gel cap & squeeze it into your pooch's mouth. Hope this helps!

Constipation can be a side effect of surgery. Try some fiber and call the doctor just to be certain.
