We can trace ours back to the 1500's. I don't know the exact date off hand. I haven't looked at it in 15 years. The most famous person would be Charles Dickens. I can't say me but I'm more famous than that in some circles.

I can trace mine to roughly 1575 (possible birth year). He was the first of the Jordans to leave England for the Americas. He had the second oldest patent in America (a type of land grant), was part of the House of Burgesses (which I probably spelled wrong) and the first Jamestown Assembly or something along those lines (I mapped all this out about 6 months ago, so give me break). His ship can be found in many high school history textbooks. It was the one that was beached in the area of Burmuda and many historians believe it helped launch the Burmuda Triangle myths as well as inspire Shakespeare to write The Tempest. I've also found a few things that said his plantation was in the vicinity of Pocahontas and John Rolfe's home, but I'm not sure how reliable those were.

I also had another ancestor who fought in the Civil War as a Confederate, was captured twice, escaped once, parolled the other time and survived through the war. I'm not sure what happened to his plantation, if it's even still stading.

My grandfather also grew up in the same town as Bear Bryant and kept records of the Red Bugs football team and was popular with the boys on the team. And my dad grew up in the same town as Jerry Lee Lewis and talked to him once (while the guy was famous) while getting his hair cut in a barber shop.

I have a really bizarre family history, but those are just some of the more interesting/"brushes with fame" parts.

One line allegedly goes back to Charlemagne in the 700's. It's actually one of the more well-researched Charlemagne lineages around and I have a high degree of confidence in the researchers (see URL below).

The Charlemagne lineage goes back another 300 years or so to the 400's and ends with Clovis the Riparian. There are side branches to many English and German royal lineages as well. However, any departure from the Charlemagne lineage that ends with him and his immediate ancestors is highly speculative.

One way to establish a link to Charlemagne is to prove that you're decscended from Catherine de Baillon in Quebec in the mid 1600's. That's not as difficult as it sounds, since French-Canadian genealogies are so easy to do.

I can trace my family back to 1664. My paternal ancestors came from Normandy France and landed in Gaspe. I do have an uncle from Winnipeg who was a furrier to the royal family of England. He was knighted by Her Majesty Queen Mary the mother of Queen Elizabeth.
He was Sir Rodney Delaney. Relatively unknown but never the less still a knight.

You should be able to trace it 8 generations, more in some cases. After 8 it gets tough because there are no records in most cases and so many people have changed their names. Okay...I am a nerd, I will admit it, but let me add this, 8 generations is liberal, it is the best you can hope for unless you can get into royalty or autocrats, hope this helps...I gotta go my pocket protector blew a leak and ink is getting on my shirt!!!!!!!!!

I can only go back a couple of generations. One of the major problems was that immigration had many people change their family names to something more American. I have no way to go back since I don't know the original names.
