My niece will be visiting us for 6 whole months, starting this Thanksgiving. She is only 14 years old and will miss the last half of 7th grade. She lives in Texas and we live in Ohio. Is there any way for her to attend our local public schools for those few months, or will the school just laugh at us?

Sorry... will stay between 6 and 8 months... enough to finish the school year when it starts in January.

She will need to be in school.

Please call your local school district to begin the paperwork to get her registered. It will be an adventure.

Call Monday!

you say visit but what you really mean is she will be living with you and 6 months is long enough in most states to become a legal resident.

there has to be more to the story since a 14 yr old is moving so far to "visit" for such a long time.....

if you fail to enroll the child in school, you could be held legally responsible. i would contact the school now, find out what the proper procedure is for enrolling her, and ask what they would advise.

if it were me, i would also get a temporary custodialship order for the child in case any medical treatment, etc. would be needed while she was staying with me. the worst thing in the world would be if she needed emergency treatment and you weren't able to sign the necessary papers.

Nope, no problem, the school will be fine with it. Just give them a call and arrange for her records to be transfered. Should take just a day to set it all up. If you don't, you can be arrested for not letting her go to school, so It's better if you do it fast!
