it's not that they are fattening it's how the body breaks them down and stores them. they are very very high carb and when broke down become sugar which as we all know is not good for our bodies.

Are Bread and Potatoes Fattening?

High protein, low-carb diets are high fashion, especially in America. In fact, some Americans are actually frightened of eating carbs.

So are bread and potatoes really fattening? Answer: No.

The truth is, starchy carbs like bread and potatoes are not at all fattening or bad for weight loss. There are very very few people who are overweight or obese because they have eaten too many slices of bread, or too many potatoes. Why not? Because these starchy foods fill up our stomach long before we eat too many calories.

They do become fattening, though, when we start adding fat to them: frying potatoes as fries or spreading butter on the bread. Then the calorie count goes right up.

Fact: Americans consume 25 percent of their vegetables in the form of french fries!!

They're very starchy, and I've found it hard to lose weight when I have potatoes in my diet. And not frying them of course, but I mean just a plain baked potato, not butter, sauces etc. When I'm trying to lose a few pounds I cut out bread, pasta and potatoes and find losing weight much easier and quicker to do.

However, if you're just trying to maintain your current weight, and are not concerned with losing pounds, I believe that potatoes can be a healthy part of your diet. Especially sweet potatoes. Sometimes when the carb craving gets especially bad I microwave a sweet potato and it's delicious! No butter needed.

Potatoes are pretty high in carbohydrates so can be fattening if eaten in excess. It also depends on how you prepare them. Baked potatoes with low fat sour cream would be less fattening then an order of french fries.

Depends on your body. My boyfriend process meat better and if he adds potatoes to it, he gains weight. However, I can eat potatoes and pasta at every meal and will never gain any weight. Portion control is most important though... small meals.

try the vegan, vegetarian sites for recipes.... that's a good start.

depends on how you eat it. if you bake or grill it, its much less fat, but say you were going to cook it in oil or cut it up into potato wedges, its alot more fattening that way. hope i helped=)
