there is nothing wrong with your dog ,he sounds great to me
he is checking up on the neighbourhood activity .
A dog sees with his nose, it is far More sensitive that ours is
(we see and get information with our eyes )
when he has found a scent ,he leaves a little scent and some urine , to allow who ever it was, to know his presence was noticed ,
then he goes on to the next ,most interesting scent !
all the way along your walk . ( lady dogs do this as well )
I counted 30 stops in one walk with my Lucy . how she managed to wee so often surprises me !
Try to relax ,
when you take him for his walk , but a gentle reminder, that you need to go on ,won't hurt ,
provided ,he can do what comes naturally ,as well .
If you can, you will both enjoy "agility" classes
These are great places ,for your dog to socialised
and learn safe control , when walking on a lead.
And it is fun
all best x

Dogs have very acute noses - so when he's sniffing he is finding out all kinds of information, particularly which other dogs have been there - we have no way of knowing how much this tells them but it is obviously extremely interesting.
As regards letting him sniff - never stop at your dog's whim. I know it goes against the grain when you have an animal you love but it really is kinder with dogs to let then know who's boss - they get anxious if there is any uncertainty and behavioural problems can develop - the tug has to tell him to move on NOW. He can sniff all he wants off the lead.or if you want to stop.
If this is your first dog I would recommend a training class - good for socialising as well as teaching you how to handle him. Some of the dog training programmes are extremely good - I've learnt a couple of new "tricks" recently from dog borstal and I've owned dogs for 20 years.
Hope that's helpful.

I have a question, whenever I take my dog out for a walk, he has a habit of sniffing one particular car in my neighborhood, im not sure why though can someone let me know. I also have another question one time I was taking my dog around the block and the people who own the one particular car that he keeps sniffing were out and he sat in the middle of my legs and would not let me move forward until they went inside their house does he sense something about these people and their car because he does not sniff any other car in the neighborhood just the one. He also has a habit of sniffing their garbage can, can he smell if there is drugs or can the dog tell that they are a dangerous group to me?

Oh my gosh I just read the previous posts and I am SHOCKED at how dumb & rude people are with their dogs!! Tugging is BAD!! Unbelievable. (Anyhow, I had to come back and ad the first part because I was so suprised at how people just don't know. I travel all the time and with my dog so I've trained him to be off a leash.....as I believe they all should be ... if people would just spend the time. Anyhow, dogs don't use their eyes like we do, they use their noses.....The can smell things from 20 years ago, they can smell something on your pants from two years ago even after you've washed them 20 times. It's the way they get around....they can tell if another dog is sick just by smelling it's feces, they smell everything because they "want to know" what and who is going on around them. Let him be as long as he wants with his leg up, that is very important....how would you like it if you were talking to a person (like a dog sniffing anything) or on the toilet and someone came along and started tugging on you....rude, right? He also sniffs for protection....he can tell by a scent what's out there ... and he wants to protect you...he feels it's his job. Love him and snuggle him and my dog Parker says "Ruff!!" be well, jack

If a puppy he shouldn't be out anywhere sniffing anything before he has had all his puppy shots to avoid distemper and Parvo, both killer diseases. Dogs sniff as they go to smell who has been there before them, establish a territory of their own and find a comfortable place to call their own Loo. You will have to pick up anything other than pee as it is now illegal (thank God) to let dogs foul the grass and pavements without removing it. Dogs like to smell other dogs and to make friends. They will leave their calling card for other dogs, out on their own walks, to read. If they linger a long time a gentle tug on the lead and say come on Basil, or whatever yours is named, should move them on to the next sniffing place. Sniffing your car is to make sure nobody else has left a mark on it. Don't make your walks a hurried affair, it should be fun for you and the pooch and he will look forward to you coming home because he knows this is his and your time.
Good luck with him.

Scent is the primary sense that dogs use to experience the world. We use our eyes, but they use their nose. We call all that sniffing our dogs do on their walks "checking their pee-mail". :D
It's your call whether you want to allow your dog to do all that extra sniffing. It doesn't hurt anything, but since you're the leader of the pack, it's your call whether you want to hang out and do the sniffies or keep going. Usually, I'll give my guys a coupe of free passes at the beginning of the walk and a few at the end, but after they've peed once or twice, they've emptied their bladders (or should have), and the rest of the pees are just marking.
The only thing you don't want to do is don't let your dog drag you over to sniff something. If he is pulling, stand stock still (or move backwards a step or two if needed) as if the leash were activating a set of brakes. Oops... pulling on the leash stops the walk! As soon as he's not pulling, and better yet looks back at you, tell him "Okay, go sniff!" and let him go over to what he wants to sniff. But if you don't want to allow sniffing for the whole walk, don't feel like you have to. Use a cue like "Okay, let's go!" when you want to keep walking, and then just walk on... he'll start to get the drill after a while.

The dog is communicating, by means of smell (olfactory). The dogs nose is 100 000 powerful than ours. That's your dogs smells things, urinates + defecates sign posts whoes bin there.
