The engine Starter takes most of the load of a battery. Once the engine is started the electronics is powered by the alternator, that recharges the battery. The alternator also needs a small current from the battery to produce voltage.
A vehicle with a generator can run with out a battery,
But a vehicle with an alternator can NOT run with out a battery.

The Battery has 3 jobs.
1. To store the power to start the vehicle
2. To supply power when the vehicle is NOT running.
3. To supply a "ballast" load for the generator or alternator while running to keep changes in RPM from affecting the electronics by "smoothing" out the power flow fluctuations from the alternator or generator.

Its purpose is to start the car. Electronics in the car are actually kept going by the alternator as it creates power while the car is running. If the car is off, then the electronics run off the battery alone.
Alternator is what recharges the battery while the car is running.

The battery's most important function is to provide power to the starter in order to start the engine.
It also provides power to electronic equipment, i.e., radio or CD player, when the engine isn't running.
The alternator supplies power while the engine is running & charges the battery.

The battery supplies power to run everything electrical, incl. lights, radio, starter, etc. The alternator doesn't run these things, it puts the power back into the battery as it is drawn out. New cars will no longer run without a battery, because of all the electronics in use.

It is a power supply, which in turn has stored electrical energy to start the vehicles engine & operate all the lights & accessories. As that energy is being used, it is re-supplied from the alternator or generator which keeps it charged up.
