Johnny Walker Blue is the premier Johnny Walker. That said, from a connoisseur's point of view, it's still not the best tasting. For the price (it runs around $135-$175 USD) you can do far better with a single malt...and for less.

...and to keep in perspective, here's where JW Blue fits in relative to how well it tastes:

You may notice a lot of people will say "Glenfiddich" a lot because it's been so marketed that it's the one that people know off the top of their heads. There's a great big world of Scotch out there beyond Glenfiddich.

Either way, you can definitely get enough information from http://www.maltmadness.com/index.html to greatly impress your future father in law if he's a fan of Scotch.

The differences between those labels is small. Personally I would pick the one I liked best, and drink some of it before offering it to the old man. If you bring out a fresh bottle that hasn't been opened, then he'll know right away that you are a n00b.

Go to your local bar and drink a shot of each if you have never tasted Scotch before. (Make sure there's someone to drive you home.)

I would go for a single malt and not a blend. Glenmorangie, Dalwhinnie, Glen Livet 12 year, Talisker or Oban are few exceptional choices. They will average between 60 and 70 dollars depending upon where you live. Best of luck to you!
