It is not hard. A compulsive liar by definition is someone who lies about virtually everything. It is a habit. So how can it be hard to detect? He or she will lie about small and big things, when there is nothing to gain from it and when it's perfectly obvious that he/she will be found to be lying. Such a person is not even fazed by being found out. So If you haven't found out this person is lying it is probably because they lie but not too compulsively. Just keep involving this person in conversation and the lying will reveal itself.

Just keep your ears and eyes open around this person.Ask questions that you know the answers to and see what they say.An example could be,you see them put an empty can of soda on the counter and walk away. You ask them if they did that or who did that.If they say no or I don't know, chances are they lie alot. But remember that these types of lies would have to happen alot to consider them a compulsive liar. they could just be lazy or have a medical loss of memory.Take into consideration how long you have known this person, how often they lie and if this is new or something they always do.You probably know the answer already and may just be looking for validation.Just be careful not to label them, unless you are positive.

A compulsive liar will lie about every thing, despite how futile it may seem, and show no remorse. Occasionally, the really good ones, make themselves believe the lie to make it more convincing.

The only way you know that someone is lying is to catch him/her in a lie. There's no way to tell just by body language, or by using some set of "rules". My friend was just telling me yesterday about how she had caught her boyfriend in a lie-- she had to go through some hassle to do it. It did not make her happy to find out these things about him.
Ultimately the decision whether to believe someone or not is up to you. If you have a strong feeling that someone you know is lying to you, you have to decide how far you want to pursue that. Sometimes just keeping a distance between yourself and that person is the best way to proceed.
I hope this was helpful! :)

You just have to catch them in their lies.
Back when I was in high school I had a friend who would tell the craziest lies. I was suspicious that she was lying, but I didn't completely "not believe" her stories until I started to catch her in her lies. I remember she told me that her parents threw her out of the house and that she was living with her aunt in Brooklyn who drove her to school, yet when I asked someone who lived in her neighborhood if she took the bus every day, he said she always did. She lied about many things, none that I can really remember (it was about 6 years ago). She also lied about having an eating disorder, being a cheerleading captain for a national squad, etc. Sometimes she would be telling the truth and I wouldn't believe her.
She eventually ended up pregnant at 15, had 2 kids by 17 and works at a cell phone kiosk in the mall.

This is a very good blog, a beginner’s guide to abnormal psychology.
Short, clear and simple; and you can even post your question and contact the author regarding particular subject you are interested in

If they lie for anything at all, for no reason.
