You are correct, the shot contains what the CDC terms as the "killed virus", and you cannot catch the flu from it. However, they tend not to hand you the lovely fact sheets that they used to when you got shots for the measle and other diseases as a child. If they did, you would know the following were side effects to the shot:
* Soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
* Fever (low grade)
* Aches
These should last no more than 3 days; however, also be aware of the following serious allergic reaction indicators:
*Difficulty breathing
*Hoarseness or wheezing
*Hives
*Paleness
*Weakness
*Fast heart beat
*Dizziness
Contact you doctor ASAP if these signs show up.

Talk to your doc, especially if this is the first time you've had flu-like symptoms after the shot. There could be something you're allergic to in it. My sympathies...I tried taking them 3 times and came down with flu-like symptoms each time so I stopped. FYI: Some people can get flu like symptoms after taking a shot, the virus is dead, and they SHOULDN'T BE severe. Be your own judge of how bad your symptoms are. Either way, inform your doc about what's going on. They need to know.

This is what is formally known as "coincidence." Every year god knows how many people get flu shots. A certain number of them get sick after the shot. That's because a certain number of people get sick every day anyway. You were most likely exposed to a flu/cold virus days ago that is just now hitting you. The likelihood of this happening the day after getting a flu shot is the exact same as the likelihood of it happening any other day.

After 6 years of no reactions, this year my arm got a huge, hot, red, painful lump where I had the shot plus some general aches and flu-like symptoms. It makes me think twice about the next one.

Same here. I was the one telling people it can't give you the flu and I was sick for 2 days after mine. Maybe they messed up this year on the shot and didn't kill the virus completely.

I hear often of people getting sick after getting the flu.
I got a fllu shot a few years ago, and if I remember correctly, there are two types--a dead virus, and a weakened virus. If you got the vaccine that had the weakened virus, it could still get you sick, just not as badly as if it were a healthy virus.
I hope you feel better soon :)
