My old iMac is a mess and I want to re install the OS but I can't find my old 9.2 CD and I can't find it on web. Can I install OS X?

Yes, but I don't recommend it, as it would run slowly. You can do as Christopher said and try eBay for a copy of Mac OS 9, but you can also try Linux. A couple of excellent distributions for the iMac are:

Probably not. And even if you did, you would only get away with installing 10.1 at the most, and you would not be able to run most OS X programs. Everything is becoming an Universal Binary so it will require at least OS X 10.3.

Do yourself a favor and go get yourself a new Mac. I would highly recommend one of those sweet new iMacs with the big display, or if you have the cash, a Mac Pro.

If your disk space and memory meet the minimum requirement, you can install 10.3.9. It's your choice, if the speed and your available softwares are your priority, then go for Classic OS (OS 9), otherwise, go for a more stable one, OS X.

Probably, but I wouldn't try the newest OSX 10.4, you would have better luck with 10.2.

Could also see if you can find OS9 on ebay, wouldn't think it would cost you much more then $10 or so.
